"I was scared to death, I thought I was going to die," he said. "I had to make the split decision choice to open fire or have him open fire on me."
Berg, 22, testified in an unsworn statement in an Article 32 investigation at Fort Knox Monday.
The Indiana National Guardsman is charged with the murder of an Iraqi police officer, making false statements and intentionally injuring himself. Berg, of Ferdinand, Ind., served in Iraq as a member of the 152nd Infantry, a National Guard unit based in Jasper, Ind. His unit was overseas for one year.
