Poll question: Tonight's compromise was
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what to make of this. The Repubs still get to push through Owen, Brown, and Pryor, and the Dems cannot filibuster anymore judges save the other two (Myers and Saad). The Repubs don't get to nuke the Senate, but what does "extraordinary circumstances" mean?

Honestly, I'm just glad this mess is over. Or is it?

1. Too early to tell anything
Everyone needs to take a breath and wait a few days before they make any firm judgement.

Seems to me like neither side is happy.

4. Reid is ecstatic, Frist is disappointed
That seems like it would be good for us!

2. I thought Owen and Brown were the worst, and now they'll get
confirmed.

5. It was Democrats 0 Republicans -1
Edited on Mon May-23-05 11:07 PM by Mojambo
I don't think it's the disaster people assert, but I don't think we necessarily have won anything, yet.

I'd say we won the right to be in a stronger position when the next battle comes, which could be significant.

If it was a victory, it sure came with a price. Owens, Janice Brown and Pryor hurt, BAD.

That's how I read it, but it's a hastily assembled opinion.

14. As I keep thinking this over, I cannot get over the fact that this
really looks like a Republican defeat. This isn't really a Democratic victory, but if the 14 Senators who drafted this compromise are right, then the Repubs won't be able to bring up the nuclear option again. Of course Dems won't be able to block Bush's nominees (except the two listed in the compromise), but they may not have to.

I might be too optimistic, but thw Repubs have lost here. The Freepers are going crazy, I'll bet.

12. Are you familiar
with how lawyers negotiate. It's SOP to ask for far more than you want. They wanted these judges. They got 'em. They won.

What did the Dems get out of it that didn't already have. Nothing.

6. I'm in agreement with glad it's over, not happy about the judges, but
that is why they call a compromise a compromise....nobody is totally satisfied with everything they want.

9. more of a rethug defeat than a big dem victory...
frist is left looking limp and pathetic, mccain and moderate repubs stand with dems against the radical right...we won some and lost some, so did they...but they are the party that holds it all so it def looks/feels like a defeat for them.

filibuster is saved for soopreme court nominees (rethugs will prolly try nuclear option again)

reid and dem leadership look united and defiant...along with moderate repubs they look like reasonable ppl...frist, the WH and the radical right are spanked and end up looking like the extremist they are.

13. We'll know who won by who gets confirmed. Too early to say now. And...
this feels a lot like the congress confirmation of Ohio electoral votes...unclear who gained and who lost in that one, but lots of people vehemently claiming victory in principle. One question though: does any of that matter now? Anyone still talking about how it was unprecedented that someone challenged a state's certification? Did it send a message to the administration that curbed their bad behavior?

I say no...victories in principle are short lived and practically useless. So it is here....no victory in saving the fillibuster unless the dems are actually allowed to do their jobs and keep radicals from the bench. That's why I think they horsetraded to throw one of the candidates under the bus...anything less would be a marginal, theoretical victory that doesn't mean much, IMO.

15. They get everything they want. So, we won?
They get their RW judges without a fight. The nuclear option is intact to be pulled out when they decide to make the Dems fold again. BushCo can claim to be uniters.

Obviously, we won.

Tell me again, what is it that we won? Kinda like we won when we prevented the invasion of Iraq by voting for the it?
