The pessimist thread
Well, there seems to be alot of celebrating around here. I also noticed a few people like me who refuse to not be prepared to have the rug pulled out from under them again. If this is victory we are fucking doomed. Has it gotten so bad that compromising the filibuster rules that have been in effect for over 200 years is a victory for us? Sorry, I ain't buying it. The only victory I saw this week was Galloway's testimony and Deans interview on MTP. I finally see people speaking out. And I don't mean speaking out without pissing off the administration, I mean telling the goddamn truth. Bush, Chaney, Rice, Rumsfeldt, Wolfowitz, Bolton and the rest of the "rat pack" should be in fucking prison. Anyone want to dispute that? If this were a "normal" GOP administration then this might be a victory for us but the only victory I can see that will appease me is when the headlines read Impeached And Imprisoned.

3. Let's only hope there's vindication and triumph in 2006 and 2008.
Otherwise, we're all doomed. Forever. Rapture or no rapture, we're fucking doomed!

Just my 2¢

5. this compromise
Edited on Mon May-23-05 10:50 PM by nittygritty
is like a temporary straw dam to hold back the flood of Bush nominations pressing against it: all the repugs have to do is give it a swift kick.

It would have been better in the long run for the Dems to not compromise, thus expediting a blatant example for the masses of the encroaching fascist takeover and lack of respect for the Constitution. All the Dems had to do was shut down Congress for an instant media bonanza.

All they've done is slow the bleeding for a minute...

8. agreed....
....I think 'Joe-Voter', if he/she pays any attention to this at all, will just see more 'Democratic appeasement' and a repug win....we went eyeball to eyeball with the repugs and caved-in....the fact is, they got their extreme judges through again....

....sorry, just more 'go along, get along' appeasement from the Dems....

....if you're trying to sell the Dems as a new lean tough fighting force, worthy to defend and lead our country and take back the reins of power from repugs in 2006/2008, good luck....fighting the good-fight, would have been better....

10. This "compromise" is like
putting a finger in the hole of the Dam. The water is fixing to come over the top though!

The Repugs created an issue where there was none. Had the Dem fight a battle that should have never been fought. They get those terrible judges in; we promise to only filibuster if the sun doesn't rise; and they get to keep the Nuclear option on the table.

Now, we are supposed to believe we won.

Kinda of like when Bush got the IWR Votes....and then went to the U.N., and many breathed a sigh of relief.

Did that stop Bush from invading?

Didn't think so.

15. I don't rightly know what Clark specifically thinks about that
But he did speak at an ACLU Georgia Dinner on Saturday...
When I get a transcript of the speech, I'll post it.

ACLU of Georgia dinner honors local activists

The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia hosts its annual Bill of Rights Dinner on May 21 to honor 10 local activists for their work in upholding the values of the first ten amendments to the Constitution. “At the ACLU, we feel we work hard all year, but the work we do is made possible by folks in the community working every day to protect civil rights and civil liberties,” said Debbie Seagraves, ACLU of Georgia executive director.

Retired Gen. Wesley Clark, a 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, delivers the dinner’s keynote address and is likely to speak on “accountability of the government to the people and how patriotic it is to speak out. First Amendment all the way,” Seagraves said.

This year the organization presents awards to Coretta Scott King, state Rep. Nan Orrock, gay civil rights activist Lynn Cothren, attorneys John E. Stephenson Jr. and Jeffrey Swart, Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund attorney Jack Senterfitt, and Nikki Alexander, a volunteer marketing consultant for non-profit groups.

11. what's the deal with the deals?
This only intimidates the Dems into a posturing. Are they going to tell us who they plan to sacrifice? They certainly cant sacrifice US anymore than we've already been SKEWERED. HUH?

"There comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part, you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all."

16. Screw compromise
I'm with you, chlamor. Time to break out the verbal flame throwers and start blasting away. I thought Galloway's remarks were outstanding. Time to return to the sit-in and other meaningful peaceful protests.

The only fear is fear itself.

18. Totally agree. The time for compromising is over.
It's like saying, "We'll let you throw out 7 of the 10 Bill of Rights amendments...wheeeeeee! We get to keep three amendments! We won! We won!" :eyes: I can't believe so many are calling this a victory. Are we blind now as well as powerless?
