Well the Democrats Were Gelded Tonight
Edited on Mon May-23-05 09:07 PM by The Whiskey Priest
Gelded: cut: (of a male animal) having the testicles removed.

Bush won! Frist Won! As of tonight there is no ideologue so rabid that they will be prohibited from assuming the bench in any Federal court, including the Supreme Court.

4. The American People were seeing this for what it was....
a power grab by the Right-wing. Now the Democrats have provided the imprimatur of legality to the argument that Frist and Bush were making.

20. Exactly
I can't believe the cheerleading going on here. I guess some drown their cognitive dissonance in alcohol, others in DU posts.

The Dems should've walked out. That simple. That would've gotten the attention of the people.

3. Apparently all they got was two judges.
We get to keep the filibuster to use whenever we like, and they can't pull the nuclear trigger this session.

Sounds like a deal to me.

9. Three judges
for now and likely an up or down on all but two. The deal is only until the 2006 elections and they just got through 3 that were 4 years old. 2 years is nothing.

10. No. Five judges, -2 not getting votes. -1 another that won't get the
needed votes to be confirmed.

= 2 judges.

14. They got Pryer approved in this deal too
Saad mignt not have 50 votes so could go down anyway. Not sure on Myers. They may have given away nothing to get 3 in.

5. The nuclear option is still on the table for any future contested vote
I do NOT see the "compromise" as a victory. The horrible judges will be voted in and the filibuster rule is still in jeopardy in the future.

This is a disaster. The Dems totally caved.

18. The 14 signatories commit to oppose the rules change, but that does
not prevent it from happening. It just postpones the confrontation in exchange for accepting the 3 nutjob judges. I cannot see this as a victory. It's saying: if we promise not to use the filibuster, you won't take it away with a rules change. If these extremist judges aren't "extraordinary circumstances," what is?

7. I am hopeful that the Dems will use the filibuster in the future
Edited on Mon May-23-05 09:17 PM by GetTheRightVote
the judges do not make it thru the vote, crossing my fingers. They will need if the Repubs try to push thru bills which will harm the public, like a bad SS bill, economic bills, etc. Inflation is on the rise and our economy is going down, I hope it helps them when these issues come up to the plate called the Senate.

13. In Frist's case, that should be "neutered"
"gelded" commonly referes to horses; hence, "gelding".

Male cats -- unless ripped open by Frist to improve his med school grades  -- are "neutered".

17. Frist lost his Control.....
From what I've read Hannity, Scarbrough, Mike "weiner" Savage are all pissed. Frist lost his Freeper/Fundie base. They were all frothing that he pull the trigger, he lost control of the Republicans and the Freeper/Fundie base will not jump on his bandwagon again knowing he failed and made a deal.

Then I saw this on Crooks and Liars:

Kevin Drum notes: UPDATE: In comments, NSF reports that Lindsey Graham claims that of the three who will get votes (Brown, Owen, and Pryor), one will end up getting defeated on a bipartisan basis. A secret codicil? Hmmm.....Ralph G. Neas isn't happy with everything in the compromise but says: " The unprincipled nuclear option has been averted. This is a major defeat for the radical right. Senators from both parties have rejected demands by the White House, radical right groups, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist that the filibuster be eliminated on nominees. It is a rejection of White House demands for virtually unlimited power to undermine the independence of the courts."

12. Dobson, Frist's boss, had this to say about developments:
"This Senate agreement represents a complete bailout and betrayal by a cabal of Republicans and a great victory for united Democrats. Only three of President Bush’s nominees will be given the courtesy of an up-or-down vote, and it's business as usual for all the rest. The rules that blocked conservative nominees remain in effect, and nothing of significance has changed. Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice Antonin Scalia, and Chief Justice William Rehnquist would never have served on the U. S. Supreme Court if this agreement had been in place during their confirmations. The unconstitutional filibuster survives in the arsenal of Senate liberals."

Working people took it in the gut tonight as Frist's praise for "finally getting the up and down vote for three upstanding judges" echoed on the Senate floor.
