1. And the real winner is...
the American People.

Whatever results the nuclear option would have delivered, horrible partisanship and emnnity would have resulted. That's good for partisans but bad for the American People. To have the senate slowed down -would that have been good for the American people?

Fair bi-partisanship is good for the American people, especially when the country is as evenly divided as it is, today's deal is good for the American people.

9. The American people win by getting f'ed at the drive thru?
Really? That's news to me.

Have you read any of the opinions Owen wrote while on the bench in Texas? Do you know just how far right Pryor and Brown are? Do you really think that workers, minorities, women and liberal causes are truly better off today? If so, no offense, but I have a bridge for sale if you're interested.

And bi-partisanship for its own sake is not good for anyone, other than the so-called moderates who now get to act like they saved the day. When in reality, they neutered the minority party even more effectively than the nuclear option.

4. oH BUT
You overlook the very longterm consequences of a shut down and total loss of the fillibuster which could have been the end result and Frist is retiring in '06 with no chance of 08.

5. What consequences? What exactly would be so wrong with shutting down
the government because of this? At this point it would be the best thing that could happen.
And don't kid yourself, the filibuster is dead.

8. Bush* is the real winner
All of his nominees will get approved and that will set him apart from any other President. Democrats have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are as unprincipled as the Republicans so America lost Bush* won.
