Unite the Fight - an appeal
I wrote this appeal to a different community, but I thought some people on DU might be interested in it.

The left are shooting themselves in the feet.
One of the biggest problems that I see in the leftist/activist/radical community is that we can't put aside our party politics, our pet projects, or our egos, long enough to present a united front. That's something the opposition learned to do a long time ago. They focused on a couple of major issues, or binding points, and united in 'battle'.
The passion and conviction that I see from my friends and acquaintances is astounding and beautiful. I am proud to know people strong and so courageous in their convictions that they will stand up for them, fight for them. Be they things I agree with, or disagree with.
What we all need to learn is that without the uniting of this passion, this strength, we can not effectively continue the struggle, no matter what that struggle may be.
We will never all agree with each other on everything, especially politics. But I will put money on the fact that the person you're ridiculing, alienating, dismissing, believes in a lot of the same things you do. Will fight for them with you so far as your interests coincide.
I'm not saying we should water down our beliefs and our principles as people so that we can all get along. Or that we should stop promoting the core ideals that we are so passionate about. What I'm saying is, what you (or I) believe is not the end all be all. You cannot convince everyone, and while you're dismissing intelligent people within your same circle, you're narrowing your sphere of influence. You're alienating your support. You're shooting yourself in the foot.
Creating elitist 'classes' within the activist/radical community is not only contradictory to what 95% of people are supposedly promoting, but it’s damaging to your campaign and the campaigns of like-minded individuals around you.
Tame your ego. Stop the cocky self-righteousness. TALK to the people around you about common goals and interests. LISTEN to what they have to say. WORK with them.
Most of us have no reason behind the size of our egos, because really, we're sitting on our asses bitching at each other and getting shit all done. That's nothing to be proud of. And I didn't sign up for that.
