11. Seconded.
Although if you have a lax view towards intellectual property rights, you might do well to find a copy at a bittorrent site. Or if your city has a kickass library you might try looking there.

The two key selling points of Pimsleur are:

1. It's entirely audio, so you're not reading and having English phonetic rules tainting the way you pronounce the words. Paradoxically this is especially helpful if you're a visual learner. By not having the crutch of the written word, you're forced to "see" the actual sounds rather than their symbolic representation.

2. It has the optimal presentation of material to stuff it into your longterm memory in that it's very repetitive yet mixes things up. For example many language learning tools would have you learn five pieces of information by laying them out in order: A B C D E, then you're forced to rewind and repeat until you've got 'em all down. The Pimsleur format is more like this: A A A B A B B A C C B A B C C D C D B C D B E (don't forget A!) E D B E, etc. so that you get things drilled into your head and just when you're about to forget them, you get a reminder.

10. Rosetta Stone at your local library, if available.
Many libraries offer it for free to library patrons.

This is the software that my husband's major international employer offers employees to learn basic and beyond skills.

Here's the homepage, call your library to see if they offer it.

Highly recommended; very user-friendly and very effective.

12. As a former language teacher, I'd recommend a tried and true
time-tested program such as Pimsleur (they were in business when I was taking French in the 1960s-70s) or Rosetta Stone (newer, but with a good reputation).

I've seen some really bad language websites for languages I know, so I wouldn't recommend just going to a website to study a language.

By the way, Rosetta Stone offers free samples of its CD-based lessons on its website.

15. Many public libraries offer it at no charge to patrons, too.
Very popular here in Phoenix.
