I have no stickers at all...all black, dark tinted windows, not even an Apple computer sticker. Especially no yellow ribbons. But, what if I put my DU donation bumper sticker on it? Will I get flipped off, then apologized to? My car looks so...so...republican right now, it needs something.

5. Oh, I know I will. But I drive what I need to drive.
Edited on Thu May-19-05 06:45 PM by Atman
And what I can AFFORD to drive. Hey, I have a web site, too. If any DUers want to help me buy a new hybrid, great, donate a few grand for a down payment for me! But I have a weekend place in the woods (all built out of recycled materials, btw) and I absolutely need a trailer hitch, 4x4 and cargo room. Essential. And I simply don't have money to purchase a $35,000 untested Ford hybrid SUV just so others will feel good about myself. We're a big party, and if ALL of drive civic hybrids, the righties will just roll over us with their hummers, anyway. (BTW, I don't have a large SUV...it smaller than the Ford Windstar minivan it replaced.)

21. We had a big GMC Suburban
when I lived in the States. Why? We have 6 kids, and no other car would fit 8. It sat in the driveway during the week and we drove a 10 year old little Subaru to commute. But we figured when we went on vacation, out to dinner, or whatever, it was frankly just as bad to drive two cars everywhere we all wanted to go together. We own an SUV now too - same reason, plus incredibly lousy roads where we live now, and we're only allowed to own one car, so having one that the family doesn't fit in is not really practical. So, you do what you can - we kept the cars meticulously maintained, didn't use A/C as a rule, reduced unnecessary driving and walked/biked many places, whatever.

2. Why? Your an American arent you?
You are free to drive what you see fit.

Fuk'm if they don't like it.

I'll drive whatever "they" want me to, when "they" pay for my vehicle.

(btw I don't even have an SUV, I just hate the nazi anti-suv mentality)

6. Where would we draw the line? Is it OK to drive something bigger
than a Hummer H1? How about a Kenworth? Should we put no limits on what anyone wants to drive, as long as he can pay for the fuel? Or do you believe there are public costs for private behavior?

11. Of course there are public costs for private behavior
I bet I use LESS gas drivng my SUV than most people do driving their midsize or compact cars. I don't have to commute to work everyday nor do I fly very much.

We all draw our own lines.

Do you think it's wrong for Kerry to own all of those huge homes and drive a SUV? ;)

17. That's a good question. I think that Kerry, being a member of the
"royalty," as it were, deserves to have his stuff. I think that he can potentially do some things to effect policies which will benefit our energy and environmental situations.

However, I think that the idea that Everyman can and should contribute in a negative way to an overburdened and insane transportation system, just because we have the "freedom" to do so, is a harmful idea. Those who can't see that the public good has been diminished in the name of liberty (in the transportation arena) aren't paying attention.

And I think Kerry ought to set a better example with his ride.

26. No, I'm not kidding. America is not a classless society, and our economy
relies on a certain amount of consumption. I don't begrudge the rich man his yacht, as long as he's paid fair taxes (a much heavier tax burden than he does now, in my view.) What I do see as harmful and wrong is encouraging large numbers of drivers in the transportation mix to pilot wasteful and dangerous vehicles they don't really need, chosen for extra-transportational reasons.

Correct.

/Or do you believe there are public costs for private behavior//

Of course there is. But I havent bought ANYONE a hummer, nor have a ever filled one up.

In terms of a car vs an SUV, the road wear, policing etc etc is virtually identical and is covered by current taxation schemes.

29. I disagree.
Parking, safety, lane width, guardrail height, are all significant issues when vehicles in the transportation mix are increasingly bloated in their size. Plus the fact that SUV's are some of the worst-handling things on the road. They just don't make sense for most people, although many people will tell you how they need them.

31. IF Semi's and other large trucks didnt exist
I'd agree with you.

Driving down the road, the threat from a semi dwarves any perceived threat from an suv.

An SUV weighs at most 100% more than your average vehicle, with most weighing about 30 to 50% more.

On the other hand, when Im sharing a road with an Semi truck, thats about 2,000% heavier and along with that goes all the safety concerns.

As for them not making sense, thats really not at issue. Unless one lives a utilitarian Amish life, most of what you have doesnt "make sense" and is more than you need.

33. The difference is that the semi's and other large trucks
are driven by trained people with commercial driver licenses and are government inspected for safety. Most SUV's are driven by people who decided they wanted an SUV, often for reasons having nothing to do with hauling needs or off-road capability, but for vanity or some other fears. These drivers are sometimes on the cell phone, applying makeup or fumbling for an audio CD that fell down between the leather seats. I'll gladly take my chances with the truckers.

Additionally, the parking and road width issues are a bit different when you consider that SUV drivers go into residential areas, narrow downtown alleys, and shopping areas where big truck traffic is not found.

I favor laws which prohibit all but small cars in congested areas. If we depend on market forces alone to solve our transportation woes, it'll never happen.

and an Opeth sticker too. S'okay though because my truck (Jeep Grand Cherokee --RED)is necessary for my business equipment, three teens and their amps, drums, guitars and friends.

I suggests you get a few kids and the sticker -- no one will bother you.

I don't know what part of the country you live in, and that should be considered. I live in the bluest part of a blue state, so I put on anything and change them often (except for the DU which is permanent)

If you put on the DU Sticker, see if you can find one of those
"NRA Member for Kerry"
or
"NRA Democrat"

That would look good on a Black on Black SUV.
