Iraq Coalition Casualty Count; NO we're NOT missing "thousands" of US dead
Pat and Michael run the ICCC; I believe many DUers are familiar with the site. I help with the research end of things.

So very often people post here and other boards about the US "hiding" hundreds or even thousands of US soldier's deaths.

That is NOT POSSIBLE. Here in Pat's own words is some of WHY that is not possible:

Question:

Is it possible the US military is hiding large numbers of US soldiers' deaths?

Answer:

In a word ... NO ... I do not believe such a discrepancy is even remotely possible. I hadn't seen the DKos diary, so went there just now and scanned through the diary and comments. It never ceases to amaze me what otherwise sensible people will fall for.

For two solid years now, Michael and I have followed the deaths in Iraq literally on a daily basis. We haunt the CENTCOM, MNF-Iraq and DOD websites ... as well as all of the major news feeds. In fact, the two of us have grown adept at finding death notices in the news media prior to the military issuing them. For about the past year and a half, Michael and I have been joined in the research by Evan D., an historian in the Washington D.C. area, and by Lynn L., another researcher whose husband is in the 4th ID. So that makes 4 of us searching the news media and the military sites, each and every day mind you, for deaths.

And after all this time, we all four of us concur. Yes, there are a few unreported deaths, which I'll explain in a minute. But not thousands. We'd have found them if there were.

Here's something that might interest you. If you go to our homepage, you'll notice a place up top that says "Fatality Details". Click on that. That'll take you to our fully searchable database.

When you get there, scroll down to the bottom of that page to where the Filters are. I'm finding that many people simply don't realize these handy, dandy little tools are there. Go over to the right to where it says "Country of Death" ... and select, say, "Germany" from the drop down list. Then hit the "Apply Filter" button over to the left.

Voila ... a list of 23 guys will appear ... all of whom died in Germany from wounds or illnesses incurred in Iraq ... all of whom have formal releases from the DOD and who are on the DOD's death list.

Now go back to the filters and hit "Remove Filter" so that you can start fresh. Go back to the "Country of Death" and select "USA", then hit "Apply Filter". There's 31 troops who died in the USA and whom the DOD has owned up to.

So there's no truth to the rumor that if you die outside of Iraq, the DOD automatically ignores you. Yes, occasionally it does ... especially if the death happens months after the soldier gets back from Iraq (Lynn's husband knows of 5 men that this applies to). And I am told that occasionally Special Forces deaths may be hush-hush. But as a rule, no. It's just a wild rumor.

And it's the same with this 7,000 business. If our list were missing thousands of names, can you imagine the e-mails we would get from enraged grannies, aunts, best friends, etc. for daring to leave their loved one OFF??? I shudder to think of it. I get called to task for every little goof-up I make as it is. I recently mistakenly entered a soldier's service branch as "U.S. Army National Guard" because that's what a news article said. Oh my ... the chaplain for the man's unit had an e-mail in to me within the HOUR complaining that it was U.S. ARMY RESERVES, dammit! And then there are the parents who write to say that the DOD published the wrong hometown, and would I please put the correct one in my database. We have thousands upon thousands of eyes out there watching that list. We aren't missing thousands of names.

The last thing to consider is this: the Bush administration isn't GOOD ENOUGH to hide that many deaths. They haven't managed to hide Halliburton's over-runs. They haven't managed to hide the troop equipment shortages. And they haven't managed to hide their own ineptness in the whole occupation. Somehow the truth has a way of seeping out between the cracks.

And me and Michael and Lynn and Evan watch those cracks like hawks.

Oh, dear ... didn't mean to write a diatribe. But this rumor is really starting to set my teeth on edge. I think I may send the above to Markos and see if he'll publish it ... at least let me get my very considered opinion in!

Thanks for the tip on the article. I hope I answered your question.

Pat K.
Researcher, ICCC

2. Deliberate disinformation is often planted on the left to discredit
This tactic is old as the hills and unfortunately with the internet, people fall for it all the more.

What SHOULD be of concern is the number of DISABLED veterans from this war which almost no one talks about. We heard there were minimal casualties from Gulf War 1 but THAT WAR ALONE resulted in over 9000 disabled vets.

4. Most recent number of Disability Claims approved from GWI is about 150,000
Note, those are service related claims,

Am dashing out the door, this is most recent stats I could did up in 30 seconds.

These vets suffer from a variety of illnesses caused by one or more of the following: Depleted Uranium exposure, exposure to Mustard and Sarin gas from the destruction of stockpiles at Khamisiyah, exposure to toxins from oil well fires, multiple vaccines (some containing thermiserol/(mercury) given in just a few days time (think 10-15!) with unknown synergystic affects

http://www.ngwrc.org/?Page=Topic&rsWebTopicID=29

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, as of March 1, 2001

- 696,661 U.S. troops served in the Gulf War between August 2, 1990 and July 31, 1991 -- these are considered "Gulf War Conflict" veterans by the VA;

- Of the 696,628, 504,047 are separated from service and eligible for benefits through the VA;

- As of December 1999, more than 263,000 sought medical care at the VA;

- Of the 504,047 eligible veterans, 185,780 (36%) filed claims against the VA for service-related medical disabilities;

- Of the 171,878 VA claims actually processed, 149,094 (80%) were approved in part (note -- most claims are made up of multiple issues, if any one issue is granted, VA considers it approved);

- Of the 504,047 eligible for VA benefits, 149,094 (29%) are now considered disabled by the VA eleven since the start of the Gulf War; and

- Another 13,902 claims against the VA still pending.

- More than 9,600 Gulf War veterans have died.

- Conflict veterans are 51% more likely to have their claims denied than "theater" veterans (those who served in the Gulf since August 1, 1991)

- Veterans who served at Khamisiyah and Al Jubayl are 37% more likely to have one or more service connected conditions than era veterans.  Conflict veterans are 8% more likely than era veterans to have one or more service connected conditions.  Theater veterans ? those who served in the region since August 1, 1991 ? are 16% less likely than era veterans to have service connected conditions.

3. Thanks. Nominated. Great info. Early in the invasion I heard several
people on air (I think either Werbe or Malloy, back before AAR) repeat the claim that if a soldier died outside of Iraq he was not listed as an Iraqi casualty. I posted it here, and had some people refute it, but others claim they knew it to be true.

The people who have heard this aren't making it up, they've heard it from moderately reputable sources. It's good to see another reputable source explain in detail why they believe it's not true.

6. Here's what I do; I use a newsfeed. That feed researches articles
worldwide, tens of thousands of articles, every 5 minutes, for any referance at all to "Iraq".

I search thru those articles for any mention of deaths.

If you had a loved one who was in Iraq and came home & committed suicide, I'd very probably know about it. Because you'd probably have a funeral. And very likely your town would print a funeral notice. And that notice would likely mention the dead had been a soldier, had been in IRAQ *BING BING BING*...and I'd then read the funeral notice and see what they say cause of death was. If it said "injuries sustained from Iraq" or "died in hospital" etc, then I'd look for the name on the ICCC.

If not listed on the ICCC, I'd let Pat know, and she & Michael hunt down the DoD/Centcom for explanation.

If the notice said "suicide", then I pass the article onto Pat for entry on the ICCC news (and I believe the ICCC is or plans to keep a suicide count as well, but don't quote me on that!)

If the notice said "cancer" or "natural causes" etc, the article still gets passed onto Pat, Michael & Evan for further scrutiny.

If no funeral, did any family, friends, soldier-pals do any online blog entry about the death? If so, it's gonna *BING* me and I'm going to look into it.

If any news report says "6 US killed" and we only get 5 notices? Pat sets up 6 blank slots when she gets the info of 6 killed...and then she waits for the Centcom & DoD releases to fill those slots. Any slot left open, and she hunts down the DoD & Centcom to explain. (And I do mean "HUNTS DOWN"! Ya just do not try to f*ck with Pat! :scared: :D )

Friends especially of any deceased want to see their pal's name listed on the ICCC because it's become the memorial bush & Cartel refuse and deny for our soldiers and their loved ones left behind. They will immediately DEMAND, in no uncertain terms, to know exactly WHY their friend, loved one, family member, is NOT YET LISTED DAMMIT.

The military could hide a handful of soldiers...but why bother for a handful? Even then they'd have to ensure the silence of any witnesses, the other US troops, the US morgue workers in Iraq, in Germany, in the US, the doctors and medics, the chopper and plane staff and pilots...

19. I'm very impressed
I spent a lot of time in grad school studying history. There are very few historians I know who put that much work into their research. Very impressive.

One odd question: I remember a British story at the beginning of Afghanistan where the reporter claimed we were being lied to about the number of casualties. He said that a lot of villagers had mementos of soldiers who they claimed had been killed. The journalist himself saw an American jeep or military vehicle off the road, shot up, with a lot of blood, but he said he saw no story about that jeep or any casualties.

Is there any chance the military has a long "missing" list of soldiers who were killed and their bodies hidden or destroyed? Is the official missing count accurate? I realize the British journalist was hearing gossip, and he could have missed the jeep story, or it could have been a non-fatal accident, etc. But what's the story on missing soldiers in Iraq?

21. Missing troops would be even tougher for the US to hide.
Missing means the families haven't heard anything from the military OR their loved ones, and we'd all hear the screaming families demanding answers in that case.

ICCC does do Afghanistan as well, but I have to admit I don't do very much there, I only pass on to the ICCC-Afghanistan anything I happen across, I don't actively look.

I'll pass that part of your Q onto Pat, as there's a much better chance of her knowing that me, altho she'd probably require more info as to date and area; some days literally hundreds of reports pass between us, so remembering an incident from 4 years ago...

To date 1 soldier is listed as "captured" and 1 as "DUSTWUN" :(

Right now, there are no troops listed as MIA in Afghanistan. The ICCC site for Afghanistan;

35. Sorry so long replying, my ISP was down (grrr!) Here's Pat's reply;
There is only one "Missing in Action" soldier in Iraq ... and that, of course, is Keith Maupin who is known to have been captured by insurgents, and whose execution was supposedly filmed, but whose remains have never been found. This is the last release that the DOD issued on him:

http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/2004/nr20040423-0645.html

You have to bear in mind that there is no shortage of blood-stained, blown-up vehicles in either Iraq or Afghanistan. We've all seen pictures of delighted Iraqis dancing around the burned-out hulks of Humvees. So I'm sure "souvenirs" are more than plentiful ... including bloody bandages, dropped helmets, cut off scraps of uniforms, boots from blown-off limbs, etc.

CENTCOM does not always report on incidents like roadside bomb attacks if there were no deaths or serious injuries that resulted. And since reporters cannot travel freely to investigate these incidents, CENTCOM can pretty much tell us what it wants to about the numbers of such attacks. But by the same token, the military cannot just "hide" bodies at will. As I mentioned before (and you've said the same, Lynn), the relatives of the dead wouldn't stand for it, and wouldn't stay quiet for long.

No, I think the military knows it can't get away with hiding their dead. So they try another tactic. They pull their own troops into hardened bunkers and sit tight, letting Iraqi soldiers die for them. I can't say much for the morality of such a ploy, but I must say it is effective.

11. Anti-war people who inflate the actual number of dead are trivializing
the deaths of our troops just as much as those pro-war bastards who try to downplay the numbers.

By inflating the number of deaths, people are saying, whether they mean to or not, that the actual number is NOT SIGNIFICANT.

1,630 deaths for a pile of total BULLSHIT for an illegal INVASION that the Nuremburg Tribunal deemed THE SUPREME CRIME is very bloody significant; it doesn't need to be inflated to 7000 or 9000 or any other number.

IF bush had not kicked the UN weapons inspectors out of Iraq, NONE...NOT ONE of those one thousands six hundred and thirty US troops would be dead.

And if you want to show people just how many 1630 is, arrange 1630 pennies or beans into rows and take a photo; that's the purpose behind the anti-war groups who do the Empty Boots, the Crosses in the Sand, the flag-draped coffins marches, etc.

People aren't very good at seeing how many 1630 really is without a visual.

13. Lynn once again I'd like to thank you and ICCC (as well as your cool
4ID Hubby), we need to watch out for the agitprop that is most assuredly out there... sources like TBR and "voice of the whitehouse" are highly suspect and easy to buy into if a poster is just going through threads to quickly in their patriotic fervor to oust the admin and seek succor from the likeminded. I speak from experience in that regard!

Anyways thanks again for your work and posting this.

I have a great deal of trouble believing anything disseminated by the White House or the Pentagon. It is only natural for me to question THEIR reports of casualties, especially with the effort they are taking to hide the arrival of coffins in the US.

Your information appears credible to me. You have changed my mind on this issue by suppling specific information in a non-hysterical, non-combative manner.
Thanks.

Thing is, common sense. If "7000" troops were dead and being hidden, does anyone REALLY believe NOT ONE friend or loved one would speak out?

When my hubby was in Iraq for 18 mths, he was in contact with me at least every 3 days or so via email or MSN chat.

-Had I not heard from him for 1 week, I'd have been fraking out.

-Had I not heard from him for 1 month, the US government & US military would know about it.

-Had I not heard from him for 2 months, YOU'D have known about it, as would have every media outlet on the globe! :D

23. Thanks for this.
They're gonna try to infiltrate the truth with worms to spoil the whole barrel.

Fortunately, at this point, they're pretty frickin' obvious.

24. Thank you Lynn
Here's some :applause: :grouphug: :hug: :yourock: :patriot: to share with the ICCC crew.

There are some real right wing assholes out there that deliberately give false information as a way to discredit us. They did it to Dan Rather too. :grr:

Don't mind them though. Keep on keeping on. You're doing a great thing that needs to be done.

25. who keeps track of the soldiers killed in training, etc.?
soldiers are killed during training exercises, here and in other foreign countries, not just where wars are being waged, is there a place to find these numbers to compare to the number of troops killed in hostile areas?

29. Here's the DOD's numbers on pdf, 1980-2002
http://web1.whs.osd.mil/mmid/casualty/Death_Rates.pdf

They don't break down numbers by training vs. other accidents, but here's their numbers for all categories.

I've been pushing this argument everytime the nonsense comes up, and I think the work you're doing with ICC is invaluable civic activism. You guys are the best, period.

Notably, my arguments in this thread

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1791170

are the exact same as the arguments Pat makes here.

31. Well done...
...but I think you're missing the 'bigger picture'.

The American Media serves the Bush Junta by DOWNPLAYING the number of Americans killed or wounded...thus making it appear that the 'war' is going better than it really is. The chickenhawks learned a great lesson in Vietnam: don't show blood, body bags or coffins with flags on TV. CONTROL all the information that comes out of the war zone.

But isn't the real scandal that the Bush Government and the American Media are HIDING the numbers of innocent civilian Iraqis they've killed in an effort to 'liberate' them?

33. It's bad enough that
in less than two and a half years, we are fast approaching the casualty count for the first four years in Vietnam, which was around 1860, give or take. At the rate it's going (averaging 65.38 per month over the course of the entire conflict since 3/03)that number could be reached in short order.

Your work is invaluable. As I've said before, the administration's lies got us into this damn war and the one thing we must avoid doing is making them look credible by buying into conspiracy theories that undermine our own credibility.
