Reporter to McClellan: Who made you the editor of Newsweek?
Froomkin had a lot to chose from!

snip>
McClellan said that Newsweek should make further amends for its mistake "by talking about the way they got this wrong, and pointing out what the policies and practices of the United States military are when it comes to the handling of the Holy Koran."

To which ABC News' Terry Moran replied: "With respect, who made you the editor of Newsweek? Do you think it's appropriate for you, at that podium, speaking with the authority of the President of the United States, to tell an American magazine what they should print?"

"Are you asking them to write a story about how great the American military is; is that what you're saying here?" asked New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller.
...
McClellan said he has recently reduced the use of the so-called "background briefings" -- but would not pledge to curtail them.

Herman's conclusion: "With all due respect, though, it sounds like you're saying your single anonymous sources are okay and everyone else's aren't."

10. Actually they are just peeking back out from their belly
After having cralled back in a few years ago, the balls are looking to see if the coast is clear to drop the scrotum back into view. "Toe checking", to see if the water is still cold.

4. I think that Scotty and friends may have really screwed themselves
Sounds like a lot of reporters that had been toeing the line are now a tad pissed off. Here's to hoping it continues.

9. Thank you for posting.
That is so f*ucking awesome.
I hope they tear the little bastard to shreds.

Wyatt Andrews reported last night on the CBS Evening News: "The White House suggestion to Newsweek was highly unusual and very specific: To atone for Newsweek's now-retracted report . . . White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the magazine should now report how the military values the Koran."

To which anchor Bob Schieffer expressed amazement: "I must say, I can never recall a White House telling a news organization to go report x, y or z. Can you ever remember anything like that?"

Wyatt: "I've thought about that, Bob. I cannot remember any circumstance like this from the White House podium. . . . I've never seen it."
****

Have they gone too far?

11. Lately they've been attacking judges and the press
How long can they continue to get away with that kind of erratic and self-destructive behavior? I'm shocked and sickened that they've been getting away with it for as long as they have.

13. I am as well.
I no longer have tv, I couldn't stand having a front seat to this administration's assault on this country and the world.
I work with sheep who believe everything they're told. It's excruciating to have to watch every day.
So I get my news online, there's a lot to read and sometimes I miss stuff like this.
Being on DU is great, it's like being alive for the first time in years. I live in a red state so I NEED this place.
News like this gives me hope.

14. self-preservation in action
These shills are only worried that their next stories might displeasure our government news censors - that's all they've ever worried about, and it shows in their reporting. Bumiller getting all testy? Tell us again about little angel's iPod...

This isn't about Newsweek, it's about saving their own skins and salaries.

18. I think it's great
that they are finally showing some courage. How DARE a WH press secretary try to control the news like that. I'm glad they called him on it. Maybe now that two of them did it, more will have the courage to do so.

I also think the press should start writing about Bush's AWOL status again. They should never have dropped that story. Soldiers are being court-martialed here for less, and no one mentions this anymore?

They could stop all this bullying if the entire press corps didn't show up for those ridiculous briefings, and instead spent their time on doing some real investigative journalism.

The notion that Newsweek had anything to do with the riots in Afghanistan, when every report from there has spoken about the real reasons, is ludicrous and should be treated that way. The riots were going on for over a week, because of the killing of civilians and because of their citizens being swept up off the streets and taken to Guantanamo Bay.

Maybe the press is remembering what they did to Dan Rather and how they, his colleagues, did not come to his aid, and thoroughly investigate that set-up, and realizing now, that all that accomplished was to give the WH the courage to go after Michael Isakoff, and are wondering, who's next?

'First they came for Dan Rather, and no one did nothing, then they came for Michael Isakoff etc'. Maybe they don't want to wait 'til the 'then they came for me' part. I hope so, because they have the power if they all start to tell the truth. And it's about time, before any more wars start, and more people are killed.
