1. One of the more distressing aspects or a class reunion
is finding out that your childhood and adolescent friends have become bitterly racist and misogynist unhappy people who bleat about "conservative values" in the desperate hope of hiding their disastrous personal relationships, business setbacks, and the myriad of disappointments which cause them to join in the hatefest which is the rightwing.
Seriously. Probe a "conservative values" person. You'll find a litany of unhappiness.
They've found a home with the Bushies.

3. Amen to that....
fortunately, I was able to avoid those people and really enjoyed my 20 year reunion, especially because my best friend was there and he and I can commiserate about the state of the union. I found that the ones who stayed in our little podunk town have no vision outside of their limited little world (surprise, surprise) and those who left were more likely to have a world vision.

and my old friends and i have been emailing after about 10 years of silence. We were all at the very top of the class, and have all turned out EXTREMELY liberal and there is a very high percentage of lawyers, architects, doctors, etc.

Looking back, I can see how being around each other shaped us ... we were quite diverse - some religious, some not, 3 of the old gang of about 15 are gay, some foreign-born, some born here to foreign parents, etc. I can't help but feel that being together taught us to respect everyone and accept everyone.

7. True enough.
But a little to sad for this poll.

Besides, there are more than a few abused kids who have overcome their histories to become fine, compassionate people, and good parents.

The cycle of violence CAN be broken.

I'm not so cure about the cycle of STUPID.
