Sign this Petition and help Moyers save PBS from Repub Operatives!

Home : Action Center :
Save PBS from partisan operatives

Kenneth Tomlinson, the Republican chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) -- the government-funded organization that was designed to shield PBS from political pressure -- is aggressively pressing PBS to correct what he considers "liberal bias."

This top-down partisan meddling goes against the very nature of PBS and the local stations we trust. Let the people speak and decide the future of PBS, not secret dealings by White House operatives.

Sign this petition to demand that Congress, the CPB and PBS station managers remove Tomlinson and support town meetings in your community on the future of PBS.

15. His speech, carried on C-SPAN
Edited on Thu May-19-05 08:56 AM by SemperEadem
was thrilling and moving... they've played it back twice so far and I know they have links to it on their website. If you get a moment, go listen to it.

10. Is this actually considered to be public television still?
I thought public television usually has documentaries and public shows, which differ from the normal shovelware non-news. PBS is apparently becoming a shill network for somebody.

11. 70,548--and here's my message:
I heard Bill Moyers' amazing speech on media reform, and like him I am very concerned about the future of journalism (both print and broadcast) in this country. It has become a cliche among people who rely upon the Internet for news that reporters these days are NOT journalists but merely stenographers, duly copying down the talking points of the Bush White House and their congressional cohorts. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is one of the last holdouts against the corporate/neocon takeover of the mainstream media, and even "unbiased" PBS currently has three conservative commentators to two liberals? And Tomlinson wants to have EVEN MORE conservative-leaning commentary in the interest of "fairness"?

Clearly, like all conservatives his idea of "fairness" means news and commentary that consistently favors the corporate/neocon agenda. That is a violation of the spirit in which the CPB was founded. The intent was have a public service network free of corporate and political influence. Since Tomlinson obviously doesn't understand this, he is unsuited to his position as chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and should be replaced immediately.

26. Mine isn't as eloquent as yours...
Like a lot of Americans, I'm fed up with this administration's control of the media. This country has been hijacked, its citizens are held hostage, & there doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it with a Republican hold on Congress. The people are being lied to & being fed disinformation by the major media, & now they want to manipulate the public service network, whose purpose is to be free of corporate and political influence. Do we indeed have a fascist government?

19. Moyer's' speech, the text for other dial-up limited folks:
http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0516-34.htm

I heard this on Democracy Now and was blown away. The story he tells about Tomlinson is absolute proof of the media's complicity in the RW take over of this country.

Hmmm... odd that everyone on the left with money won't help. God I am so sick of this cult of money where you start out caring and then you turn out not to care at all.

34. Signed yesterday and received a nice note from
the exec. dtr., whose collaborative efforts re "media reform conference in St. Louis 5/13-15" resulted in an excellent forum for Bill Moyer's wonderful speech; not bad timing, either.

Seeing all those smart and caring people focused on vital transformation gave me a real boost about a more positive future.
