Operation Save America burns the Koran
source: http://www.operationsaveamerica.org/streets/oh/Columbus/suspected-muslim-terrorist-present.htm

The group's motto is: "Jesus is the standard" ... it appears from their actions that this standard does not include religious tolerance.

Edited on Wed May-18-05 08:55 AM by Mizmoon
I assure that many Christians would take umberage with the assertion that the Koran is somehow "more sacred" than the Bible.

I'm not even religious and I think that's a silly assertion.

16. According to the BibLe, the BibLe is DivineLy inspired
According to the Qur'an, the Qur'an was directLy dictated by God himseLf.

Those Christian who take umbrage misunderstand IsLam (which is most of the fundies I have come across).

Show me the Christian who refuses any version of the BibLe except the Hebrew/Aramaic O.T. and the Greek N.T. ands you may have a point - Last I saw the fundies aLL worshipped the A.V. which dates from 1611. Who refuses to aLLow non-Christians to touch the BibLe. Who wiLL aLways pLace the BibLe in the physicaLLy highest pLace in the room.

The Qur'an IS IsLam, the BibLe informs Christianity.

8. Wow, just wow
What a bunch of insane lunatics! I love the shirt on the guy in the background "INTOLERANT". Yeah, thats a real model Christian created in Gods image and following the footsteps of Jesus! We all know Jesus hated so many people and spoke about it often! :sarcasm:

Amazingly enough, most of the Muslims that I know are very tolerant of Christianity. They respect the bible and Christian beliefs, because they are very similar and have many overlapping characteristics.

Of course, this was a radical right-wing group, but its not too far-fetched from all the "rag-head" hating that is being forced on us daily from this administration and right-wing. I just wonder what the reaction will be when one of the Right-Wing groups in the mid east decides to burn a bible?

12. Pack of idiots.
Isn't there some way we could just pair up religious extremists and let them kill each other? Take one Jihadist and one of these fuckheads in the picture above and lock them in a room together? Then when the screams die down and only one of the fools can walk out of the room under his own steam, we lather, rinse and repeat with another opposite religious extremist? Kind of like "Celebrity Death Match" for hatemongers who think their belief system is the only one on earth.

Normal, non-violent people of any faith as well as athiests and any other member of the reality-based community could then go about the buisness of their lives.

Just a thought.

For anyone who hasn't bothered to click on the link in the original article,

Jad Humeidan was spotted at Columbus City Hall, Thursday July 22, 2004, when Operation Save America (OSA) burned a "gay" flag, a copy of Roe vs. Wade and a Muslim "holy" book, the Koran. Mr. Humeidan, camera in hand, took picture after picture of OSA Director Flip Benham....

41. old news with very current relevance ...
Edited on Wed May-18-05 04:32 PM by welshTerrier2
what kind of campaign are you on here ???

we have a right-wing, religious fundamentalist government ... we have a government that is abusing Muslims they captured ... we have a government that does not recognize the Geneva convention ... we have a government that tortures people who have been convicted of nothing ...

and we have very current news, and an associated cover-up, that to further dehumanize their prisoners, guards were flushing the Koran down the toilet ... that is CURRENT NEWS ...

the fact that i found an old story (less than a year old) that shows that many of the nutcases in the religious fundamentalist movement have no tolerance for other religions is only "OLD NEWS" is you have a basis to believe their attitudes have changed ... trust me, they have not ...

this is not "dredging up old news"; it is reflecting the current truth of religious intolerance in the much of the US and its holier than thou fundamentalist community ... it is the message the rest of the world should understand about the religious zealotry that has our government in its grip because the message it sends is the truth ...

is it also irrelevant to bring up that the US sold weapons to Saddam? is it also irrelevant to bring up that the US has a long history of invading other sovereign nations to exploit their resources? is it also irrelevant to continue to raise issues like Abu Ghraib ...

the truth of the present is often best understood by looking at our history ...

we have a right-wing, religious fundamentalist government ... we have a government that is abusing Muslims they captured ... we have a government that does not recognize the Geneva convention ... we have a government that tortures people who have been convicted of nothing ...

So what is the value in bringing up a year-old news item about something a PRIVATE group did, which is likely to piss Muslims off even more? Didn't the Newsweek debacle of last week result in enough extra deaths of innocent people to satisfy you?

44. our very own Pat Buchanan ???
Edited on Wed May-18-05 05:46 PM by welshTerrier2
sorry but i couldn't disagree more ... i was listening to AAR yesterday and whoever the host was played a quote from Pat Buchanan ... Mr. Buchanan stated, and i paraphrase, that it didn't matter whether the Newsweek article was true or it wasn't ... He said Newsweek shouldn't have reported the story either way ...

am i to understand that you share the same position?

if you do, here's my response: we cannot allow our government to do whatever it wants to whomever it wants ... sometimes the truth hurts but we cannot allow the American public to elect and support a government that hides the truth from its citizens ... because, if we don't know the truth, i can't see how we can have a democracy ...

where will you draw the line on "enough extra deaths of innocent people"? will there be fewer deaths if this right-wing government is allowed to escape prosecution because the media use their judgment and decide whether reporting the truth is in the national interest or could affect international relations? how about reporting the news and turning this corrupt government, or at least those responsible, over to an international tribunal? we are engaged in a battle for truth and justice ... those who claim the high ground must be shown to be the hypocrites they are ...

just where will you draw the line on your suppression of free speech? suppose it is true (someone posted this on DU today) that the US has underreported the real numbers of Americans killed in Iraq ... suppose the real number, as this post claimed, was really 9000 instead of the widely reported 1600 ... suppose that providing the real number gives aid and comfort to "the enemy" and demoralizes American troops ... would you like to cover that up as well?

suppose that the press had been able to prove that bush was lying about WMD in Iraq before the invasion began ... but suppose bush told them that Saddam was killing hundreds of thousands in his own country and the WMD was the only excuse the American people would accept to go to war ... should the press remain mum in that situation so that we could invade and save all those innocent Iraqis? again, where do you draw the line ???

i share your concern for the backlash our government's hideous conduct is likely to cause ... but i don't share your remedy ... get the truth out so that the American people understand the evil that exists in their government ... government should be conducted in the light of day ... the costs of telling the truth may at times be very high; but in most cases covering it up will cause far more damage ... in a democracy, the people have got to know the truth ...

Edited on Wed May-18-05 06:23 PM by slackmaster
I was reacting to the knee-jerk reaction by other participants in this thread that seemed (and I may have been mistaken) to indicate that they were under the impression this little weenie-and-koran roast was late-breaking news.

where will you draw the line on "enough extra deaths of innocent people"? will there be fewer deaths if this right-wing government is allowed to escape prosecution because the media use their judgment and decide whether reporting the truth is in the national interest or could affect international relations?

The article under discussion concerns the actions of private individuals, not the government. It seemed to me the timing of starting a thread about it on DU without making it clear the incident happened a year ago and not last week was tacky, and a lot of people seem eager to jump on it as if it is a current event.

i share your concern for the backlash our government's hideous conduct is likely to cause ... but i don't share your remedy ... get the truth out so that the American people understand the evil that exists in their government ... government should be conducted in the light of day ... the costs of telling the truth may at times be very high; but in most cases covering it up will cause far more damage ... in a democracy, the people have got to know the truth ...

Once again, the incident under discussion here was not an act of government.
