The Repubs DU'ers love...if they're still speaking to you, what are they
Edited on Tue May-17-05 07:33 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
saying?

:dilemma:

My repub family and friends are backpedaling from gwb in this manner...

Yeah, I voted for him, but I don't agree with: (actual qualifiers I've heard)

his economic policy

the war

his environmental policy

talking out of two sides of his mouth regarding immigration

the attempt to "gut" Social Security

The economy

outsourcing of jobs

and, from one of my more enlightened family members, the proposed anti gay marriage amendment

Soooo, a couple of years ago, these folks were doing the "my president right or wrong" shuffle. Now, it's "ummm, busted, OK, I voted for the guy and now I (belatedly) realize he's a disaster." And sort of apologizing, which is huge, since I have been unrelenting in my criticism.

For those of you who want to paint all GOP'ers with the broad brush of evil...I would offer that you don't know any who are wonderful people but woefully misguided politically. And, in the current political enviroment, Nixon would be considered a liberal.

I would just say...any repub who is loved by a DU'er can't be all bad. MKJ

1. No change, unfortunately.
My parents are both huge Bush supporters. We cannot even discuss it anymore. I hate it, I can tell you. I like your last line of your OP, by the way :)

3. I have one family member (my father) whom I love unconditionally
and who really believes that criticizing the president (especially a repub prez) is horrible. He faintly praised Clinton, but now feels that he is somehow programmed to support gwb. And I totally love the guy, what can I say? MKJ

6. I'm in the same boat.
And no matter what, I love my dad and won't let politics change that. And believe me, I have been flamed for that decision.

10. Rail against the government.
I never EVER mention * by name or any of the rest of them. I simply rail against the government and no one argues with me. Instead, they tend to agree.

17. Great approach..."the government" vs gwb
It is actually the nature of true conservatives to mistrust "big government".

If this current administration isn't big government, I don't know what is. MKJ

2. I'm struggling to think of any I am in regular contact with.
Mmmmm, my best friend's parents but I see them about once a decade or so.

Both of my neighbors, but I only talk to one pair and they NEVER bring up politics, never have (I only know they are bush supporters through an accidental slip on someone else's part). And I don't exactly love them, so there's that.

Hmmm. I'm at a loss here. My husband is a Democrat, my boss and his wife are Democrats, my closest friends and their spouses are Democrats, the people I occasionally hang out with are Democrats.

But I'm glad to hear some are coming to their senses. Geez. Did they need to be wacked upside the head with his evil nature and ignorance or what?

4. They are now saying they are sorry they voted for him
I just roll my eyes and walk away when I get that line. Now they come to their senses???? WTF?

7. Hello, My name is BHP and I have repub family and friends...
What can I do with them? They all know where I stand, unequivocally and yet still love me.

And now, they are ever so gradually, seeing the light. It's a beautiful thing. MKJ

5. No change that I know of.
We had a falling out and due to dire need, I've had to let them back into my life. It's a love/hate relationship. :(

9. Ouch, that's brutal. My brother and I no longer speak because of
our political differences. Fortunately, other family members think family trumps all and would never stop talking to me just because of politics.

My repub friends are people I've known for decades, when politics was a fun debating point and not the toxic environment that exists now.

I know many people that have had estrangement from those they love because of the current atmosphere. The "great uniter", indeed. MKJ

with the broad brush of evil."

Don't feel bad many Du'ers knock everyone, even people who are mostly on their side, like Bill Clinton, Hillary, Bill Maher and a few others. I wonder how those people get along with their other liberal family members.

15. Hmmm, that would be most of my family, and we avoid talking politics.
DH did once yell, "John Kerry!" during a dinner with one of my very conservative sisters. She was shocked, but she did at least see the humor in it. ;)

For the most part, the other members of my family are quite religious, and not willing to go against the Repubs. I don't know how they rationalize this when the Rs are soooooo evil...
