is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling the the atrocities foisted on the prisoners has very little to do with extracting information, but is mostly the work of deviant assholes acting out their sick fantansies, terrorizing the prisoners simply because they can?

i see parallels between what's going on at these places and what was done to the prisoners of the nazi concentration camps of the 30' and 40's.

what the fuck happened to my country?

2. Solzynitsin (sp) in Gulag Archipelago
identified the huge SU prison camp system as serving no purpose, not even as slave labor. He thought that the system existed to employ bureaucrats who would always claim that the inmates were dangerous or for those whose hobbies included sadism and wanted to blend work and pleasure.

In my mind, the number one reason why torture occurs is because the torturers enjoy it. All you need is a place where nobody cares what happens. That's what's fucking happened to your country. Nobody cares what happens or why to the people caught up and imprisoned.

4. It's a power conundrum.
People who have been granted control can either responsibly manage it or go "Hey, I've always wanted to see what a pile of naked Iraqi men looks like!"

They *thought* they were doing good. That's what the thumbs-up symbol means.

The problem with this administration is they do not take responsibility. If a Quran was desecrated and they corrected the problem with all the "There are regulations about wearing gloves and it's to be treated as a piece of artwork" instruction manuals that are handed to the soldiers, then it was wrong to force Newsweek to retract a story about it.

This administration doesn't want people to KNOW they fucked up severely; they are all RIGHT all the time, and do not want to have to eat crow on this little matter that would probably open a floodgate ... to more frightening things.

5. it is the worst thing ever
I do think it is a sick perversion, how much info can they get, people will confess anything if they are hurt long enough, and bad enough. I think use of torture is what separates the good people from the bad. Our country is being run by very bad people. They should be fired!!!!!!!! There is an old movie, put out around 1984, called Brazil. It was surreal back then but now it has come true.
