WTF did this happen?

I was speaking to a co-worker yesterday, and letting everyone know what Bill Moyers had to say at the Media Reform Conference this weekend. I mentioned Cronkite and how several of the older newscasters who have been around for years are very outspoken about the direction journalism has moved to.

I'm only 36, but growing up I remember Mr. Cronkite as being the most trusted man on TV. He told the truth everyday to the american people. My grandfather (a lifelong republican) and the rest of the older generation I grew up around held him in very high esteem.

WTF did his reputation get so twisted?!

Because he's in favor of government accountability and a press that does its job instead blowing the Pretzeldent. Obviously he's an un-'Murrikan communist. :sarcasm:

4. When he refused the Kool aid and spoke truth to power

they zapped him off the air and have been attacking him ever since.

Every now and then, send him an email saying thank you for some essay by him you just read. Remind him that his message is getting through and he is still a great American voice.

8. Ever since the radical right wing of American politics

decided to lurch even further right, anyone to the left of radical rightism is demonized. What was formerly quite moderate is now labeled "liberal."

9. You should see "Outfoxed"

Cronkite makes some very reasoned arguments that FoxNews is really nothing but propaganda. (IMO he has more integrity in a single moustache hair than their entire staff combined.) Coincidentally (yeah, right) after Outfoxed came out, they started attacking Cronkite--don't know if that's still going on, though.

It's worth seeing both for Cronkite's comments and the comments of some of their former employees, as well as seeing their entire propaganda operation exposed for what it really is.
