MSNBC wants to know YOUR feelings about the Newsweek story
MSNBC's question of the day, "Has Newsweek's apology gone far enough?"

Currently, about 3/4 of the people think that it was not enough and by the e-mails they are sending are buying into the WH's propaganda spin.

Don't just vote, E-mail them!!!!

5. Here's what I wrote
My gut instinct tells me that they didn't get the story wrong at all. This seems like more strong arming by the administration to get people to recant what truths they are willing to tell. I urge people to read Newsweek's entire statement regarding this matter before they make up their minds. This administration will not be satisfied until there is no one left in the media who will dare print or say anything that the White House does not prepare for them. Wake-up people, a FREE PRESS IS ESSENTIAL TO DEMOCRACY!!

6. I think it's a BS question
Edited on Mon May-16-05 01:42 PM by Oreo
They shouldn't have apologized at all.

17,000 votes and it's 26% YES to 74% NO

The story is already cemented in the sheeples' minds. Even if proof comes out (and I'm sure it will) it won't get any press.

20. I agree--let the US apologize for Gitmo!
not Newsweek for reporting abuses.

Red meat for the propogandists. They're gonna Dan Rather Newsweek--The story is undoubtedly true, yet they will be skewered for their source!

BS indeed!

7. Also sent an e-mail
I told them the apology went too far - a reading of the actual report and follow up indicates Newsweek did nothing wrong. Additionally these reports have been in the media for months, if not a year.

What are the chances my e-mail will be read??

9. Sent them this via email
The Bush administration is who needs to issue an apology. The abuse and torture at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and elsewhere was rampant and was authorized from the White House, itself. Our new attorney general is the one who even drafted the notorious "torture memo". Newsweek did nothing wrong. There are *many* other incidents involving abuse of the Qu'ran (in the eyes of the detainees) that show much lack of respect for other cultures exists in this administration.

Had the administration followed the letter of the law re: the Geneva Conventions and other international law, none of this would be an issue and we might actually have won a few hearts and minds.

As it is, the exact opposite is happening. But, that's what happens when war is waged by politicians based upon radical ideologies.

10. my humble response
The only thing Newsweek has to apologize for is that people were harmed due to reaction to the article. That would not be an issue if the military, intelligence, and private military contractors were not allowed to use tactics of intimidation and psycholocical manipulation that would instill outrage. Detainees are just that until proven otherwise. They should be treated as the keepers would wish to be treated.

Amen. Torture was authorized in the oval office and trickled down from there, setting the stage for explosive situations like the current. Has Bush ever apologized?

They are out to destroy Newsweek, one of the few magazine I can pick up and actually enjoy reading. Now watch Time attack Newsweek the way NBC and ABC attacked CBS over the Dan Rather thing...

14. MUCH better use of your time is this story:
Body Counts
The Pentagon secretly keeps track of many grim statistics in Iraq. The numbers are not encouraging.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7818807/site/newsweek

Just above the ‘email the author’ link he's written: "What's your own common sense tell you about all this? Let me know."

COMMON SENSE is a coded way for him to call on those who are actually paying attention for help! For example, my COMMON SENSE tells me that my government covering up casualties is wrong, and that the insurgency is only getting worse. This guy is pleading for us to raise Hell! DU this people!

Many of these reporters know that something is very wrong. They're out in the field. They see the carnage and bloodshed. They see the lies used to cover them up. Unfortunately, it's the editors that get to decide what stories get in. I really do believe that this reporter is trying, in a subtle way, to get support for this story to break into the prime-time MSM.

15. Trick question.. not worth of answer
Edited on Mon May-16-05 02:05 PM by SoCalDem
why>

answer yes they have apologized enough..... implies that they were WRONG to report the story, the story was wrong, and they have atoned for their sin.

answer no they have not apologized enough...implies that the story was wrong, and they are stubbornly withholding the apology..

REAL question should have been....

Was the story false?

16. I don't like the question.
Edited on Mon May-16-05 02:17 PM by Blue_In_AK
My instinct is that Newsweek originally reported a true story, and that no apology is necessary from them. The apology should come from the US government for encouraging such tactics.

On ed. -- I posted before I read the other responses. I see, once again, that great minds think alike. :)
