Article from poli sci prof...
...and former U.S. Congressman Glen Browder on the future of the Democratic Party in the American South.

I'll refrain from comment for the moment, but will say that I find the Register's inclusion of this odd except to realize that this type of thing will be what they refer to as equal time for the "liberal" side of things when they're in the midst of their normal conservative idolatry.

2. I agree, it's a great article and I concur with his deductions.
I live in the south now (moved from Pa in 1987). I did everything I knew of to promote a Dem in 2004. There are many problems, including getting good candidates to run. On the 2004 ballot, most Pub candidates ran unopposed! I have no idea if the writer of this article is right or wrong, but at this point, I'm willing to listen to all options to see if some good ideas emerge.

3. Well, the South...
...has always been pretty much a one-party region and it has basically switched parties in the last few decades.

4. I suspect it will remain Republican for quite a while to come.
I moved to the South in 1987 from Pa. I was absolutely SHOCKED that the racial wars are still alive and well in the south. I can't see "the South" changing their aliegence for decades. They still detest Dems because Johnson forced segregation on them. All the recists will have to die, and their siblings who believe them, before time will simply make the racial hatered be forgotten.

It's a very sad situation, and you don't hear much out in the open, but it's still here. You hear a lot about it all being about abortion and gays, but that's a cover for what they really feel.

I haven't a clue what might make them change except time.
