US-style uniforms for yobs in new disorder crackdown
Home Office minister launches war on 'culture of disrespect'

Gaby Hinsliff, political editor
Sunday May 15, 2005
The Observer

Teenage yobs are to be forced to wear US-style uniforms as they carry out community service punishments under plans for a new high-visibility crackdown on public disorder.

The move, echoing American chain gangs whose members wear orange jackets to shame them publicly, will be highly controversial and could risk reprisals.

But Home Office minister Hazel Blears argues justice must be seen to be done in the battle against what the government calls a 'culture of disrespect' - ranging from swearing, spitting and neglectful parenting to petty crime and violence.

1. What are yobs?
I can tell from the article they are people who have been sentenced by the courts. But is 'yobs' an acronym for something? Just never heard the term before.

What the U.S. call punks or slackers. Well, not slackers--they're famous for NOT doing anything of importance. "Overgrown juvenile deliquents" is more like it.

3. Depends...
A yobbo is simply yob (boy spelt backwards) with the standard Australian -o extension added to it. Yob is an english word, but the Australian meaning is slightly different to the English one. In English English, yob is about equivalent to hoon. Yobs break into houses, they mug you. That sort of thing. In Australia, yobs, or yobbos, predominately are beer swilling, potbellied Australians who swear while watching sport on the telly with their mates

5. So, in Australia a yobbo is...
what a couch potato is here in the US. I've known a few of them in my day.

Thanks

6. We need to import these yobs somehow
As everyone knows, we have been having largely a "yobless" recovery here in the States. Yoblessness is a major problem among our yobs.
