Celebrate Bear Awareness Week....
Join Defenders in celebrating national Bear Awareness Week, May 15-21. This year Defenders is teaming up with zoos around the country to promote special events that educate the public about the integral role that bears play in nature. As human and bear interactions increase, conflicts sometimes occur. Bear Awareness Week provides an excellent opportunity for communities to learn more about the simple steps they can take to reduce the likelihood of conflicts. Defenders continues to address these conflicts by administering programs to increase tolerance for grizzly bears through The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Grizzly Compensation Trust, which pays for livestock losses, and The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Proactive Carnivore Conservation Fund, which uses methods to prevent conflicts with bears before they occur.

Help mark Bear Awareness Week by "adopting" a polar bear or black bear through Defenders' Wildlife Adoption Center. And, visit our Bear Awareness Week website to learn more about bears and events being held during the week.

1. I loves the bears
I just think bears are some of the coolest beings in the world. Such a pity what we've done to them and their habitat. Shameful really. Elimination of our natural predators has really skewed our whole ecosystem. What a mess we've made.

3. Bears!
Do you have a link to the website? I love bears.

I always visit the polar bears (Gus and Ida) at the Central Park Zoo when I'm in NYC. They are great photography subjects, when they are awake:

7. Thanks, but FYI the link is wrong
I think you have a comma instead of a period, so it goes to a different site. I had to type in www.defenders.org to get to the right place.

But thanks, I found it!

8. Yes, I did
I have taken hundreds of photos of the bears at the Central Park Zoo.

I would love to go to Alaska or Canada and take pics of bears in the wild.

I am going to adopt one of those polar bears!

11. My kids
are huge animal defenders, too, at their young ages (9 and 13). It's all about the animals for them (e.g., no Big Macs or any other meat).

12. Thats funny my little girl too, doesnt eat any meat
Just chicken nuggets once in awhile but thats it on the meat,

Its heartbreaking though when she see on tv what is going on in the world she cries, but I tell when she gets older to do what she can to make a difference
