OK * wasn't told because he was "bike riding"
My question is, just where was he bike riding? Around metropolitan DC? Not likely. Just where was he doing this? I've never heard, does anyone know?

2. In a wildlife researrch center in Maryland
I know, I had the same thought (I pictured him circling maniacally around and around the White House, which sadly proved to be untrue) so i looked it up. I'm sure the researching scientists appreciated it, crazed biker comes through while they are trying to construct delicate habitats.

> On a Bicycle in Beltsville, Blissfully Unaware
>
> By Dana Milbank
> Washington Post Staff Writer
> Thursday, May 12, 2005; Page A13
>
> When the state of red alert was declared yesterday, the vice president was evacuated from the White House and the first lady was whisked to a secure location. But no precautions were needed for President Bush.
>
> He was out at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Beltsville, riding his bicycle -- at noon on a Wednesday -- blissfully unaware. "The decision was made to inform the president upon conclusion of his bike ride," Bush press secretary Scott McClellan said later.
>
> It was not the first time a crisis has focused uninvited attention on the Bush fitness routine. On a weekday morning in February 2001, when a gun-wielding man was shot outside the White House, it quickly emerged that Vice President Cheney was working in his office, while Bush was exercising in his residence.
>
> Bush opponents have tried -- to no avail -- to profit politically from the president's leisure activities. Anti-Bush filmmaker Michael Moore poked fun at Bush's long vacation in Texas before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and his admonition on the golf course to "watch this drive" after commenting on Middle East violence.....

Established in 1936 by executive order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Patuxent Research Refuge is the nation's first and only National Wildlife Refuge devoted to wildlife research. With land surrounding the Patuxent and Little Patuxent Rivers between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD, the Refuge has grown from the original 2,670 acres to its present size of 12,750 acres and encompasses land formerly managed by the Departments of Agriculture and Defense. Throughout decades of change, Patuxent's mission of conserving and protecting the nation's wildlife and habitat through research and wildlife management techniques has remained virtually unchanged.

All visitors to Patuxent Research Refuge are expected to comply with local, state, and federal laws and regulations, as well as with the following conditions:
  • Traveling off roads, off trails, and in closed areas is prohibited.
  • The Refuge speed limit is 25 mph unless posted otherwise.
  • Pets must be kept on a leash (up to 10 feet) and under control at all times.
  • Plants and animals (living or dead) may not be disturbed, introduced, or removed — with the exception of legally harvested game and fish.
  • Traditional park-like activities such as swimming, boating, tubing, rafting, picnicking and sunbathing are not allowed on the Refuge.
  • Possession of firearms or weapons is prohibited with the exception of hunting in designated areas with a permit.
  • Please do not litter. Take any trash with you and dispose of it properly.
  • Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Curious George Rides a Bike
CURIOUS GEORGE RIDES A BIKE
(By H.A. Rey)
The man in the yellow hat gives Curious George a brand new bicycle. What adventures are ahead for this little monkey and his new bike?

in Curious George Rides a Bike, he not only makes boats out of all the newspapers he was supposed to deliver, he also ruins his new bike and creates havoc at the circus when the ostrich swallows his bugle. But, in the end, George untangles himself and saves the day: He rescues the baby bear that has escaped from the circus and is applauded for his heroics.

Maybe he knew it was a fake out or maybe he is really not president...just a figure head.

I think it is sad. What was he doing riding a bike in the middle of the day on Wednesday?

Really responsible guy.

22. Reminds me uncomfortably of how they didn't wake Reagan
for a crisis that occurred during his reign. Comedians had a heyday with that, but then, as now, it doesn't make me feel that much better that the President wasn't notified. Competent staff, yes, that's good. Incompetent Prez who might as well not be there? Not so good.

29. he could have been flying a kite...I guess.
I just heard Scotty 'too hotty for bulldog' McLellen say something about everything going according to plan. And we should be a reassured. I'll take him at his word this once. If this is true then 'the plan' does not include the president because we have been told he wasn't in the "need of knowing".

If this were an airliner and something really horrific happened our supposed commander n' chief would have been down in the park picking cherry blossoms and singing songs. My two year old son loves to do this as well. I like to say that its his time to be off in lala land. He'll stumble along, sometimes tripping and busting his lip, and sing. I can't make out the words because he has yet to learn to pronounce them but he still sings along to some unknown tune. Occassionally, he'll pick some grass and throw a stick in the pond, everytime a plane flies over head he'll yell "airplane!!!" in this cute little infantile voice. One day that plane could be the cause of an evacuation, but he wouldn't know it. He just sings and laughs and points at the sky when they fly past. If he's really motoring he might even say "SKYYY...Zoooomm Zooom".

I'm talking about my son silly. But it fits for Bush as well. Sorry to say my two year old son isn't our president. If he were scotty McLellen just told me that it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference.

The one I'm assuming you're thinking of is not a contest, this is new this year. I judge the Ribberfest in Madison every year, an a few in Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan & Ohio. Always try to make the Jack Daniels in Tennessee every October, but not "prestigious" enough to judge there yet.

On Edit: we have a DU meetup group here, so keep in touch when you come back.

36. I think he was feeling the effects of his meds and incapable of response.
That's what I think. That's what I believe all these stupid "bike rides" are about. Sure, he puts on a show now and then of riding his bike, but not to inform him when 30,000 people are evacuated and it could have escalated into pandemonium in our nation's capitol, somebody has got to be kidding us. Stick your protocol where the sun don't shine, Scotty.

One more time, everybody: If Clinton had done it, there would be outrage from the media!

"Blissfully unaware." Thanks, Dana Milbank. You nailed it.
