"Commonweal" on the Pope's firing of Rev. Reese from Catholic magazine
Scholars Ponder Pope Disciplinary Actions
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The final act of Ratzinger's tenure in his old job came in mid-March when, according to Jesuit sources, his office pressed leaders of that religious order to remove the Rev. Thomas Reese as editor of America, an influential U.S. weekly.

The irritant wasn't Reese's own doctrinal views, but articles he published by scholars who took issue with Catholic officialdom.

Reese this week declined any comment on the circumstances of his departure or his views on dissent. But others are buzzing.

America's competitor, the lay-edited Commonweal magazine, editorialized that Reese's removal leaves the impression that the church is ''a backward-looking, essentially authoritarian, institution run by men who are afraid of open debate and intellectual inquiry.''

1. Commonweal is a pretty good magazine
This Pagan ex-Catholic finds it quite enjoyable reading, often very scholarly. About two years ago they had a long article about "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," and how moral Buffy and her friends were... INCLUDING WILLOW AND TARA (a lesbian couple), and how they were very much the Good in the Universe.

3. "a backward-looking, essentially authoritarian, institution, ...
run by men who are afraid of open debate and intellectual inquiry" ...
first so perfectly well with the Augustinian line of the church and it is so opposite of who i think JESUS is, at least the JESUS whom I know in my heart.

During the initial days of Ratzinger as Pope I thought he might be willing to be open to growth and listening to different views from his own.

it is too sad that the current trend does not seem to be taking him or his papacy there.
