Mom stabs her kids 200 times each -- almost no national media
While a guy in the same state kills his daughter and her friend, and the cameras are swarming -- yet the woman who stabs her kids 200 times gets virtually no coverage, at least not mroe than a day's worth. How many children are brutally murdered every single day in this country? 1500 deaths by child abuse a year I believe is the statistic?

How do the MSM sharks decide which tragedy to feed on? Are they (and their viewers) just tired of yet another mother killing her kids? Do viewers need a new kind of vicarious horror?

1. They didn't know at first who killed the two girls.
There could have been a serial child killer on the lose. That's why that story got more attention.

12. Exactly, especially since it was in a small town
These things are more "expected" in highly-populated urban areas.

2. She was hot news two weeks ago
until it came out that her motive was rooted in religious fundamentalism. Then it all went away. Seems the MSM had some urging to not make the fundies look bad.

3. Perhaps because the murder of the two little girls was, for a time,
a mystery. This case was not.

That may be the deciding factor.

7. Just for the sake of argument:
There was no mystery in the Andrea Yates case, either, or that other woman in Texas. Is it posible that the corporate-network producers who decide what gets covered have decided that those kinds of stories are just passe now?

13. Could be. Perhaps they think the audience has murder fatigue?
If I knew I'd be running a cable news network. At this point, I don't even watch the crap.

16. I think a lot of it has to do with other news stories
going on at the time.

Boring old Iraq news? Bring on the child-killers!

Terri Schiavo? Let's drop everything else, it's all-Terri, all the time!

My friend worked for a local Fox news affiliate several years ago. Her job was to call up police and fire stations to get the scoops. A car accident wasn't news unless four people or one or more child was killed, etc. I don't remember the exact numbers, but you get the idea. There were guidelines.

Blood leads, unless there's more blood somewhere else, and then that leads.

And yeah, I think once they do a string of killer-mothers, they get tired and move on.

It's all just a big circus for us masses.

17. IMHO yes.
But the reaction when a woman commits an act like this is, "Why? What would cause her to do it?" And the reaction when a man commits an act like this is typically "Hang him!" If you don't believe me look at the thread in LBN.

9. The woman who stabbed each of her kids 200 times is white.
I just looked at the link.

Yikes. It's horrific. A 9 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. The dad came home to find that scene.

8. A totally irrational act by an insane person, just how should an....
...episoide like that be reported? It seems that any brutal act which is sensationalized, is being reported out of proportion and for reasons other than informing the public. Just my opinion, the man who killed his daughter and a friend, should be treated no differently by the media than the woman. The publicity feeds into the emotions and needs of these kind of sick people.

14. So how do they choose which to sensationalize?
Little children are murdered in terrible ways every single day in this country, so how does the media choose? Is it some kind of Jungian collective unconscious?

23. None, those kinds of events don't deserve endless headlines...
...for the benefit of the mass media and the publicity for law enforcement, for crying out loud. These are sick people who should be put away and serve prison terms and proper justice, or if found insane, put in institutions for the criminally insane. Sensational good things that happen, not the horror events.

As for a Jungian collective consciousness, we've had over 150 years of this type of reporting and look where it has brought our culture. FoxNews with the highest ratings and rantings. Sensationalize the murders on both sides of the fighting over in Iraq, theirs and ours, and get that shit over with.

Mothers and fathers and humans in general do some very strange things on their own, like these two stories. We have a really fucked up culture and the amazing part is that there aren't more of these kinds of behaviors than what we see. They are random and they are few and far between, thank goodness. But, this type of thing goes on 24/7 basis on a mass murder organized scale in Iraq and dozens of other countries, but the news we see on MSM is about the acts of two insane parents. I'm done.
