I bought a poppy from a young veteran today
When I gave him the money he thanked me and Isaid I just wish the Administration would really support our troops. And he said "I do too, M'aam, I do too"

3. Yeah, an artificial one to pin on your lapel.
Quite common back in the 50s. You'd see Veterans selling them every now and then.

5. Yeah, around Veteran's Day and Memorial Day,
The veterans organizations sell poppies for remembrance- Little paper poppies- I put mine on my purse next to my no Bush button.

The poppy symbol comes from the poem

"In Flanders Field"

by Major John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The poppies grew in Belgium, where many WWI casualties were buried. That's where the symbol came from.

8. More Pop(py) Music, by Eric Bogle
Ah the sun now it shines on these green fields of France,
The warm summer breeze makes the red poppies dance,
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds;
There's no gas, no barbed wire, there're no guns firing now.
But here in this graveyard is still No Man's Land,
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man,
To a whole generation that was butchered and damned.

Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the Death March
As they lowered you down?
Did the band play
"The Last Post And Chorus?"
Did the pipes play
"The Flowers Of The Forest?"

10. The fade away at the final BlackAdder goes forth cuts from
the boys going over the top into the battlefield to a field of poppies. I cry whenever I see it.

6. THANK YOU
My father in law was a WWII vet and a member of the DAV. He passed away last Christmas and reported to the staff of the Supreme Commander. Every year I bought one from him and I have all of them next to his picture. Thank you very much.

11. I always buy a poppy
Our veterans are horribly mistreated by this administration. They are only useful to them when they can use them to score points or votes, otherwise, they are neglected.

7. Pretty well
everyone in Canada and the UK buy and wear poppies for Rememberance day on Nov 11.

I was unaware this wasn't a custom in the US
