Kennedy: Just days left until Frist unleashes the "nuclear option"
Edited on Thu May-12-05 11:43 AM by paineinthearse
Received by email from Senator Kennedy's campaign office.

Dear Jeff,

We have only days left until Senator Frist and GOP leadership trigger their plan to pack our courts with their unqualified, right-wing nominees. Over the past week, you and thousands of others have made our case against the GOP abuse of power -- and it is impressive.

So yesterday, Senator Kennedy took our case against Senator Frist's nuclear option to the Senate floor. The Senator answered their baseless attacks with the truth. Please take a moment to read Senator Kennedy's speech and selections of your comments:

Our voices, joined together, are a powerful testament to the dangers of the GOP's ultimate power grab to erode the checks and balances in our government. The GOP and its right-wing allies are intent on abusing their power to pack the courts with unqualified, ideological judges. The Senate has a duty to preserve the independent judiciary, as it has for over 200 years.

Just yesterday, Senator Frist declared that he plans on unleashing their destructive plan as early as next week. He is under intense pressure from his right-wing allies to force a vote - so he has run out of time to avoid this showdown. Senator Frist will have no choice but to trigger his "nuclear option" next week, and we will be prepared with our answer.

We will do everything we can to stop the ultimate right-wing power grab of our courts. In the past three weeks, your comments have helped make a compelling case against their destructive agenda. We only have a few days left to take our case to our friends and neighbors.

Please ask your friends and neighbors to join our fight - we need everyone we can to keep the right-wing from imposing their ideology on our independent judiciary:

Thank you so much for being part of our team.

Sincerely,

Tom Lopach
Kennedy for Senate

2. What about Chafee (R-RI)?
Or is he non-swingable?

3. Here is a better list
"We need six of those nine in order to stop the nuclear option. I believe we already have four: Chafee, Collins, McCain and Snow. That would mean we need two of the following five: Graham, Hagel, Lugar, Smith and Warner."

Although it's from April 25...

4. Speech text
America has stood for fairness, opportunity and justice. Generation, after generation, our nation has been able, often with intense debates, to give greater meaning to these values in the lives of our citizens. But what we have seen in recent years is a breach of these values in order to reward the powerful at the expense of average Americans.

Those in power passed massive tax breaks for the wealthy and short-changed everyone else.

They granted sweetheart deals to Halliburton Corporation in Iraq while our troops went without armor.

They let the polluters write the pollution rules for our water and our air.

They let the oil industry write the energy policy in secret meetings in the White House.

Two weeks ago, over the opposition of every Democrat in the House and Senate, they forced through a federal budget that preserves corporate tax loopholes at the expense of college aid, and slashes Medicaid for poor mothers to pay for tax breaks for millionaires.

They twisted arms for three and a half hours in the dead of night on the floor of the House to pass a so-called Medicare reform that rewards HMOs and drug companies at the expense of senior citizens and the disabled.

They broke the ethics rules of the House of Representatives, then changed the rules to avoid investigation.

They want to break the promise of Social Security to our citizens by privatizing it, handing it over to Wall Street, and cutting benefits for middle-income Americans.

Now, Republican leaders want to break the Senate to get their way – this time with the nation’s courts.

5. Just got off the conference call with Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean and
500 others.

Who else here participated?

Judging by the lack of response to this thread, does anyone even care about the nuclear option?

Ted Kennedy called it "Grab for power / overturning the will of our founding fathers" and called for support and action.

Oh well, go back to what you were doing, this is not urgent.
