1) Urgent Action: Pass 'Gold Standard' Voting Machine Paper Trail Legislation (http://www.workingforchange.com/activism/action.cfm?itemid=18973)

During the last session of Congress, a variety of bills were introduced calling for a voter verified paper audit trail for all computerized voting equipment. However, none of those bills even made it to a vote.

In the new session of Congress, a "gold standard" piece of legislation has been introduced -- the "Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act" (H.R. 550). This bill requires that all electronic voting equipment has a paper audit trail as well as requiring that voting machine vendors make their code available for public inspection and random audits.

Please act today: Tell your members of Congress to co-sponsor and support the "Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act" (H.R. 550)! (http://www.workingforchange.com/activism/action.cfm?itemid=18973)

2) The Biggest Story of Our Lives

By Jim Lampley http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/2005/05/biggest-story-of-our-live.html

At 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Election Day, I checked the sportsbook odds in Las Vegas and via the offshore bookmakers to see the odds as of that moment on the Presidential election. John Kerry was a two-to-one favorite. You can look it up.

People who have lived in the sports world as I have, bettors in particular, have a feel for what I am about to say about this: these people are extremely scientific in their assessments. These people understand which information to trust and which indicators to consult in determining where to place a dividing line to influence bets, and they are not in the business of being completely wrong. Oddsmakers consulted exit polling and knew what it meant and acknowledged in their oddsmaking at that moment that John Kerry was winning the election.

And he most certainly was (http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/1970/), at least if the votes had been fairly and legally counted. What happened instead was the biggest crime in the history of the nation, and the collective media silence which has followed is the greatest fourth-estate failure ever on our soil.

… margins for error are valid, and that results have fallen within the error range for every Presidential election for the past fifty years prior to last fall. NEVER have exit polls varied by beyond-error margins in a single state, not since 1948 when this kind of polling began. In this past election it happened in ten states, all of them swing states, all of them in Bush's favor. Coincidence? Of course not.

Karl Rove isn't capable of conceiving and executing such a grandiose crime? Wake up. They did it. (http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1106-30.htm) The silence of traditional media on this subject is enough to establish their newfound bankruptcy. The revolution will have to start here. … This is bigger …

3) National Election Reform Conference Inspires Attendees
Experts, Activists, and Legislators meet to "Save our Democracy"

by Vickie Karp, Coalition for Visible Ballots
http://www.solarbus.org/election/articles/050506-karp-nashville.shtml

The National Election Reform Conference to Save our Democracy was held in Nashville Tennessee on April 8th to 10th, 2005. Vickie Karp, National Chairperson of the Coalition for Visible Ballots (http://coalition4visibleballots.homestead.com/) attended the conference and provies this informative report.

When CLINT CURTIS spoke, he addressed the crucial need for election reform activists to organize into mass action. He said, "You know what the difference between Republicans and Democrats is? Democrats CARE…Republicans just want to WIN!" and he aptly pointed out how well organized they are.

BOB FITRAKIS is a political science professor, an award-winning investigative journalist, author, editor of the Free Press, and one of the four attorneys challenging the election results in Ohio.

He commented on the "Orwellian doublespeak" in the use of the name "American Center for Voting Rights" for an organization formed just weeks ago, comprised of Republican operatives who claim to be working for fair elections. Of the dozens of REAL voting activist groups that have been working throughout the country for the last several years, this is the ONLY one which was invited to address a Congressional hearing on Election Issues in Ohio March 21st-then issued a whitewashed report which ignored thousands of verified reports of real voter disenfranchisement and mistabulated votes.

ROBERT KOEHLER, syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune Media Services, and a journalist and editor for over 25 years, addressed the group, stating that after the election, most of the media responded "like a pre-programmed Diebold machine". He commented on the "power of mockery" used by the media, selecting one or two reported incidents of voter repression or vote fraud and trying to make concerned citizens appear hysterical or conspiratorial for trying to uncover what we know to be the truth.

DAVID COBB, Presidential candidate for the Green Party, gave a passionate talk, beginning with the statement that the corporate media is manufacturing consent on a daily basis. Through the power of repetition, it's message that "we had a fair and clean election in November" has been ingrained in most Americans. "Unelected and unaccountable CEOs of international corporation are ruling us, just as slavemasters ruled their slaves! We need to get corporate money our of politics", he stated.

4) John Kerry, in a speech given last month (http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/04/11/kerry_urges_citizens_to_defend_their_voting_rights/), warned that our right to vote is being eroded. Even so, he claimed that no "smoking gun" existed to prove that the compu-vote had been hacked.

5) MONEY TRAIL REPORT

Black Box Voting Update: New Consumer Reports (May 4-10, 2005) http://www.blackboxvoting.org.

-- Large payments from Diebold are fueling influence-peddling in Ohio and Cook County/Chicago. Black Box Voting has learned ..

Andrade admitted to Black Box Voting in a videotaped interview that he has been taking payments from Diebold, but said he wasn’t sure if it should be characterized as “lobbying.”

However, nothing about this appears to be very public, and the amounts paid to Andrade, uncovered by Black Box Voting through documents obtained from a source inside Diebold, amount to an unusually high amount, at $20,000 per month. More:

6) Prediction: What Repubicans Will do to Thwart Exit Polls in Future http://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/

How will the Republicans explain away continuing disparities (in 2006 and points beyond) between the exits and the so-called actuals? Three mechanisms come to mind. Republican propagandists will:

1. Increase pressure to keep exit poll results secret until they have been "conformed" to the manipulated compu-vote.

2. Emphasize an inherent bias in polling methodology -- a bias allegedly in existence since 1988. (For the truth of the matter, re-read Lampley's words above.)

3. Mount a campaign to "punk" the exit polls. Limbaugh and company will tell their audiences that the exit pollsters represent the allegedly "liberal" media, and that Republicans should therefore lie to pollsters or refuse to participate.

Would such a campaign succeed? Success or failure doesn't really matter. In 2006, the mere existence of such a campaign will serve as a catch-all explanation as to why the exits do not tally with the official results.
