God told landlord not to rent to fornicators?
Edited on Thu May-12-05 09:38 AM by atommom
They say it was racial discrimination. She says it was the Lord telling her not to rent to fornicators.

Closing arguments are expected this morning in a civil-rights trial involving a Lawrence couple, Adrianne Morales and Wayne Jackson, who say they were turned down for an apartment in 2002 because she's Hispanic and he's black. But the apartment manager, Lynne Sander, says she rejected them because God recently had told her she shouldn't rent to unmarried couples.

"I am following God's law," Sander told jurors on Wednesday. "I did not discriminate against them. For my morals and my integrity, I did what was in my heart."

She said that at the time she was so concerned about renting to unmarried couples that she would drive around the complex again and again, pretending it was the biblical city of Jericho -- and believing that the walls might figuratively come tumbling down.

1. These people need their own fucking country
They are not operating on the same reality/logic system as everyone else. Not by a longshot.

Driving around the complex, because the walls might come down like Jericho?

2. Well, that would count as religious discrimination as their religion
obviously differs from hers.

She's still guilty of discrimination.

4. These people have always been around
We just have a media more willing to let us know about the "high moral ground" we pagans are missing out on.

15. HAAAAA
That was quite funny!!!! I grew up in a "conservative" household and all of them pick and choose what they like out of the bible or they try to interpret differently to suit their own needs. I really do believe there is a special place in hell for these people. I'm just thankful I met my husband and got out. Otherwise I would still be miserable like the rest of my family!

8. Doesn't matter what her intent was. It's Discrimination. Period.
In the eighties, they made "no children allowed" apartments illegal. You can't turn anyone away unless they're a credit risk.

Get your checkbook out, Bitch.

13. where are "no children" apartments illegal?
i still see them advertised. a landord has more latitude in not renting to people than just bad credit.

14. No pet apartments are legal as well. Clearly,
I would be denied an apartment on the basis that I have pets. Would that be discrimination and should I sue?

18. I've been running into that one
No Pets. However, I have found something interesting even with that. Many that say no pets, will allow CATS. Some have said to me, "Oh, we meant DOGS. We have no problem with cats."

Discrimination based on species? MEOW!!!

19. Actually, it's now down to breed
Some places that say no pets mean no dogs, other's mean no pitbulls. Not sure what that has to do with anything but I thought I'd point that out.

20. Insurance companies can deny coverage based on breed
so it may have something to do with that.

21. No I don't think you should sue
I think that if you have animals and rent you should have to pay for a new carpet and have the place cleaned by professionals. When the next family that moves in with a baby it won't have to crawl through cat,dog hair and piss.

16. It depends
If you are renting say a floor or room in somebody's home where the owner will still be living in the home, they can refuse to rent to a couple with children. Actually, they can pretty much do as they want. The key is that the owner must be living in the same house that he/she is renting.

Senior or Retirement Communities which have age requirements also can ban children or anybody under a certain age from living in the units.

When you start talking about multiple unit dwellings, apartment buildings, that is where the laws against discrimination start to apply.

17. I'm a landlord-
we rent out the upper apartment of our two-flat, and live in the lower- so as you said, we can set just about any rule we want regarding who can live there, and refuse to rent to anyone for pretty much any reason...within reason.
