I think it's time we finally organize a march on Washington...
If we could get literally one million people to go to Washington, I think we could actually make some noise.

Just like many of you, I feel hopeless. The media is a joke, the Democrats have their hands tied, and we can do almost nothing but just watch in pain.

If we all marched on Washington, the rest of the world would know that not all Americans are for this administration.

I'm not sure what the theme would be, but I definitely know it should be a positive one. We could use one of the following... or something better if anyone has any ideas.

- Pro Freedom March
- Pro Democracy March
- Democracy for ALL March

I know these are not very good, but they are start. Any other thoughts?

2. Then we should go for the "Impeachment Now!" march.
If we want the rest of the world to know, it needs to be "in your face we want rid of these knuckleheads" marches.

Peace marches are great, but controversial marches get coverage.

Remember, 48% of the people that voted in this country didn't vote for these guys...twice!

(That's 48% officially counted, not actually cast...the real number is probably closer to 55%)

Quit my job, hitch to DC from Mich. Stay indefinately - as long as it takes. I'm ready! Not for anything less than calls for IMPEACHMENT and CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS.

Now, where's everyone else?

and it was totally shot down as a bad idea, because of how crowded DC is at that time, and most people have plans for the weekend..blah...blah...blah

personally, I think the 4th of July would be very appropriate...

31. 12 million protested around the world
before the war. it was barely a blip.
marches in dc are a routine occurrence that no one pays any attention to, least of all marches on the 4th of july, when everyone is out of town.
i'm not saying it's bad to march, i'm just saying don't think it is going to change anything. unless you are talking about descending on the capital, and shutting it down for a week or so.

everyone who has cause to despise Dictator Bush would come together on one day or weekend. he is a criminal and should be held accountable for his crimes. beginning with his failure to uphold his oath of doing all in his power to protect the american people. he allowed us to be attacked for most of the morning on 9/11/01 and did NOTHING to stop it; he allowed his buddies at Enron to RAPE the people of California and did NOTHING to try to stop it; he continues to support anti-environmentalists in his buddies large corporations; he continues to support the big insurance and pharmaceutical companies in their bid to RAPE america's senior citizens;the list goes on and on..

56. If you want to get a million people
Make this massive demonstration appeal to ALL the liberal organizations and various issues, rather than just one. Don't make it strictly an anti-war march, tho of course that could be one of the bigger themes. But there are lots of groups working on other issues--bring tham all together in Washington. Groups working for human rights, womens rights, gay rights, election reforms, social justice, healthcare, the environment, energy alternatives, freedom of expression, etc etc you name it.

This administration has managed to alienate just about every liberal group in America--there would be something for everybody.

9. You would need a single 'theme' to rally around
We liberals are too disorganized. :) We have a lot of groups with their own issue(s).

Perhaps something like, Administration Failure, and each of the disparate groups could then put their issue underneath, ie in Iraq, on Freedom, on the Economy, etc. This way everyone can get involved and not feel that their issue is being ignored.

The key would be to keep the main theme, like Administration Failure, on the top of each of the signs or press releases and the main theme of the entire event.

Just my opinion.

24. An Impeachment March without a chance in hell of it being taken
seriously unless the House and Senate see some major chances would be just a waste of good energy. How about a march to demand health care for all citizens? Or a march against the federal debt, or against the war? Social Security, Environment? We have the numbers on each and everyone of those issues - so much to scream about.

Of course, we could organize a massive march to protest the entire state of the union and have each and every contingency bring their issues to the march. We could stage a sit in and have speakers all day long.

Hey, maybe instead of a protest how about a march to restore a democracy to our government for the people and not big business. I see wave after wave of groups willing to work together to restore sanity to DC. Maybe we need to let the sheeple know that their country has been hi-jacked by the large corporations, the rich elite and the media. Be just in time for the gearing up of the 2006 election cycle. Then do it again next July 4th right before the elections. We have got to get organized and make so much noise the media will not be able to ignore us.

Count me in and if it is during the summer I'll drag along a couple of grandkids.

81. That it would not in itself lead to impeachment
does not make it unsuccessful in other venues. Watering down the message makes sure it doesn't get across and continues the public's belief that the Democratic party doesn't have a cohesive message, aren't really "for" anything.

We need to turn the tide of American sentiment. A well orchestrated single focused protest in DC (I'm not for doing it on July 4th - nice symbolism but again, diffused by too many other things) will help to do that. We can help the sheeple follow the right message by making an end run around the media whores.

Nobody likes to be with the losing team and if a million plus people march on Washington demanding impeachment, impeachment, impeachment, the fencesitters will decide that we have the wave, the trend and will get on board with us. And then it snowballs..................

19. I told my husband, on Nov. 4, 2004.....There WILL be a March on DC...
Granted, I was in shock (to put it mildly),but I told him that Americans won't stand for 4 more years of this corruption; that there
would be a MASSIVE protest, and to expect that I would be taking the boys and heading to DC NO MATTER WHAT when the time came.
He actually requested vacation time the week of Jan. 20; but the protest never materialized as I had anticipated.
Of course, I realize there was a protest..and I was so proud. But that wasn't IT. America wasn't angry enough yet.... I'm talkin' shut the whole goddamned COUNTRY down kind of protest.
Between GannonGate, the Schiavo thing, the Bankruptcy Bill, the U.K. Iraq memo, and the Not-so-Friendly-Skies Fiasco, I feel we are on the brink of the BIG one. I am SO there!!!

To get people's attention, messages that focus on single issues I think would be more effective than listing everything.

For example, health care...

35. My thoughts
Edited on Thu May-12-05 09:23 AM by deutsey
Apparently anti-war demonstrations are planned for October

But I agree with you that broader demonstrations are necessary and, most importantly, need to be part of a coordinated effort to reform corporate media ownership, the electoral process, and put enormous pressure on Democrats to be a real opposition party.

In other words, marching around in DC ain't enough...it's just a visible expression of a larger, concerted grassroots effort needed to push forward a progressive, pro-democracy agenda.

That's where the disconnect is, in my opinion, between marches and effective change. We get tens of thousands out in the streets, but then everyone goes home and complains because the media didn't cover it, as if that would somehow magically change everything.

I want to see the marches get the coverage they deserve, but, again, they should only be the tip of the iceberg that brings down Bush's seemingly invincible Titanic administration. Before we even get into the streets we need to organize groups in our neighborhoods, towns, counties, regions. We can use the Internet as a great way to organize and to disseminate information, but we've got to get offline and into face-to-face meetings. There has to be the social part, the sense of real human connection and solidarity, or else the movement will evaporate into virtuality. The revolution, as Steve Earle sings, starts now in our own hometowns, in our own backyards. Not on the Internet

We need to have specific targets and objectives for these groups to take action on.

We go to the march as an energizing show of strength--not with any delusions that a march by itself will change anything, but to show ourselves and those in power that we're not alone.

Then, when we return to our homes, we keep the momentum going through the grassroots activist groups and networks and personal relationships and coalitions we built prior to the march.

I know this goes on to some extent, but it's not coordinated and there isn't the kind of national leadership and consistent follow through necessary to build a movement, and not just a march.

Those Saturday marches don't do a damned thing. No one's in town. Yes, Saturday is convenient for everyone, but it creates a march that's more like a convention than a demonstration.

Yeah, remember seeing footage of the Million Man March, and during the Vietnam Conflict all the hippies that filled the entire Mall, from the White house to the Washington Monument.

And I have a suggetion that I've been sitting on for a number of years now. We organize at the mall, millions of us gather around the man made pond at the foot of the Washington monument. We all bring a bag of Tea leaves and chuck them in. If we can turn that whole pond into Tea then I'd say we'd really done something.

Also I think someone should document the whole thing. Make a documentary on the protest. If the network news won't cover it, there are other ways to let people know we were there. It may get people wondering "How come I never heard anything about this on the News?"

49. Absolutely make a documentary...
and let corporate media do their usual ostrich routine with their arrogant "if we don't cover it, it didn't happen" attitude. Look at the impact of Michael Moore's documentaries. This is the way to go.

I would like to nominate "MEMOGATE" as the
theme/title for our march.

If the memogate issue does not wake the
murikkkkans from their coma, then they DESERVE
what they are going to get.

41. Good Idea But
title is too complex. Must be short and to the point. Many will not appreciate the alliterative quality and things with GATE at the end are to be treated w/skepticism by public. MEMOGATE will leave the memo clueless public scratching their heads. Must be forceful-IMPEACHMENT NOW!

And reasons why can be explained readily and felt by many.

LET'S GO-PEACE

Thanks to our weasel press corp.

Personally, I don't care what we call it-

The daily damage they do can NOT continue!
I think the natives are finally getting restless,

48. I think there is alot
more discontent w/ this Admin. than we even know. Not only are (DIS) approval ratings not looking good for BUSH but WAR IN IRAQ is not acceptable any longer by most of the public. I suspect if we really organized relentlessly and cohesively we could get LARGE marches throughout the States. My recommendation would be for September. July 4th has too many folks in Vacationland/frame of mind, lots travel in August and time is needed for coordinating a March of this size. I'm there side by side whenever-wherever it is and will help in organizing if it's a go.

ok, that is one thing that i would get behind. you don't even have to believe that one was ever rigged to get behind the idea that it could be done too easily.
march for a world wide standard for free, fair, transparent elections. there is even something in that for the jingoistic out there. and any coverage at all would be more than the issue is getting now.

52. Perhaps we are targeting the wrong things.
What if we are targeting the wrong areas? The wrong people. The wrong place. The wrong everything.

Let's look at the history of *. We will only drive interested people away if we talk about fixed elections, but that is where it started for most of us. So if we have a rally we need to spin this item to make it people friendly. We are looking for voter confirmation (paper ballots), not to prove that elections were stolen. We want support, not division. BTW, I do believe elections were stolen. The elections were too divisive so that is not what we want to stake anything on even though it would be cool to have a large group rally in Ohio and in Florida at the same time.

I think what is really craving attention right now is this memo. Let's trace it back and what happened? NY was hit, right? * used this to further his agenda and that is where the memo comes in. He had been planning to use something to hit Saddam and this played into his hands.

What is one of the best appeals to the people? I think an emotional appeal works wonders. The 9/11 attack gave our nation so much heartbreak. The RW has used it to their advantage and we can use it to ours. So many people do a walk on Washington that it is common place *yawn*, but how many people do a walk on NY?

There are so many angles we can use. If we pick a long weekend then we can really spread out our efforts. NY is a media saturated city. We can do demonstrations right outside the windows that these people report from. We can hit them where they live. Even if they do not cover it, we might be able to use them against each other so that NBC covers us demonstrating Faux News and vice versa.

NY is also home, of course, to 9/11. If we can get our message out, this could be very powerful. Imagine us marching to where the 2 towers once stood and bringing our message that * decided to use our citizens. He had an agenda and he used the dead men and women of our country to further this agenda. I bet some of the people that lost family members would gladly show up. This would be a round about way to get that message out.

NY also houses the UN. Perhaps we could even march there and make a plea to help us with our situation here and put pressure on * and his war criminal activities.

We can make copies of the memos and distribute them all weekend.

And NY just may be liberal enough that we may get big coverage. I bet, with all the stars who live there, some would even be willing to use their influence.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

57. I love it, but I really think it needs to be Washington.
I love the idea of going with a message that brings people together. Protesting against the war and the election makes us look bitter and unamerican. Asking for impeachment makes us look like a bunch of hateful liberals. Not that I agree with these things, but it would push many away.

If we focused on a theme of democracy for all, then I think we might have a chance. We could focus on health care, social security, the environment, jobs, and foreign policy. We could have speakers talk about these issues and how they affect the typical American. We could be very positive and very anti-Bush at the same time.

This is something I feel needs to happen. I hope we can all work to get it organized soon.

61. Agreed
Impeachment as the overall theme would be spun against us (we'd get plenty of media coverage for a change--but all negative). Doesn't mean that the topic can't come up, of course. Like u say, make it "very positive AND very anti-Bush."

I like the focus on the word Democracy, as that is what is truly at stake and unites all the various liberal causes and organizations.
Keeps it in the positive, and yet implies the bigger picture concerns.

53. I actually like later than sooner...
I want this to be very organized, and very public. We could get speakers like Kerry, Boxer, Dean, and Clark(maybe even Clinton(s)).

Also, one of the most important things it would show is that Democrats are organized and focused.

I suggested a positive name to show that we are not just a bunch of bitter, hateful people... like the right was against Clinton.

63. Yes,but...we must have a simple common theme...
We are long overdue for a big march on DC. But it can't be a "smorgasboard" rally if we can avoid it. The issue must be clear and simple and not diluted.

The problem is that we have too many problems to choose from. And it takes so much effort and energy. United for Peace and Justice and International Answer have done the best jobs recently--whatever one thinks of those two groups is not the issue here. A few other groups have come close--

But damn I agree. We need a mobilization the the media cannot ignore. We need to do something since our elected government, and even our Democratic representatives still seem more driven by the corporate influence than ours.

70. Ummm... I hate to rain on your parade (march) but...
Edited on Thu May-12-05 12:49 PM by intheflow
we had between 500,000 and 1 million people march for reproductive rights in April 2004 and the media barely blinked. Because the Nat'l Park Service no longer makes official crowd estimates, attendance reporting falls on organizers and thus crowd estimates are easily discredited by the media as being inflated.

Therefore, I think we'd need well over a million in Washington, maybe as many as 5 million. But perhaps a better avenue to go would be to target getting 5,000-10,000 people to march on each state capital. This would get local news attention as that many people marching on 50 different state capitals would be unheard of on a national level. It also makes economic sense since most people cannot afford to take the time off from work or the travel expenses to go to DC.

And conceptually, I like the 4th of July as a target date, but realistically people usually have plans that weekend. For example, my old church has a major fundraiser on the 4th every year, selling food along a parade route. If we didn't have that fundraiser, our church might literally fold--it brings in THAT much money. Likewise, this year my best friend is getting married on the 4th of July. So that's two more people who couldn't make a protest (me and her). These may seem like petty reasons for changing any march to another day, but if I (ardent protest junkie that I am) can come up with two reasons that would keep me away, I'm sure many if not most other people sympathetic to the cause might have similar concerns.

*Edited for clarity

we bring in the big name dems, hillary, kerry, boxer, jackson.......we demand of our leaders to participate. they are OUR part

i think enough dems, with enough notice will see 4th of july united in solidarity against what is happening to our country a wonderful vacation

77. If we could get Olbermann and Stewart
to participate, we'd be on our way to some real coverage for sure. Can we add Moyers and Randi? I'd still have to miss it on July 4th because of the wedding, but then, I should be allowed a major protest off, since I'm batting 1000 on the huge DC protests this last year and I'm a poor grad student living in Denver.

If this looks like it's growing legs, I'll support the effort in any way I can.

NYC(NorthEast)
Detroit(NE-MW)

87. Just Convince Progressive Groups To Get Off Their Backsides And Unite!
A National March On Washington To Bring Our Troops Home would be great. That could unite everyone who is against the war ..... and that would be most of the population.

Now all you have to do in convince the numerous antiwar organizations, leaders and progressive groups to get off their backsides, put aside their sectarian differences, unite and call it!

And I'd certainly have no problem with signs and banners defending our democratic rights being prominent in the march .... including the right of soldiers to speak out against the war!

Please read the following appeal addressed to anti-war leaders and organizations urging united anti-war demonstrations this fall.
