So ya think Faux Moos is the #1 news channel??? You'd be WRONG...or
a rightwingnut.

The Ratings Mirage

On any given day, more people typically tune to CNN than to Fox.

The O'Reilly Factor is the best-rated show on Fox, with about 2 million viewers a night. CBS Evening News, the least-watched broadcast network evening news show, routinely gets four or five times as big an audience.

Fox's flagship news show, Special Report with Brit Hume, gets a million viewers on a good night-a few thousand more than the local newscast of New York City's WNBC.

Fox likes to position itself as the alternative to all the other news that's on TV. If it's true that news can be put into two categories--Fox and everything else--then when Special Report airs, everything else beats Fox by at least 30 to one.

OH NOOOOOO!!! It's them treasonous FACTS again!

RUN AWAY, rightwingnuts, RUN AWAY!

2. I'd heard some time ago that when people in the US watch the "news"
they turn to CNN, NBC, etc.

When they want entertainment, they go straight to O'Reilly, Hannity, of Cavuto.

This prime time tabloidism skews the ratings.

5. Yep
Around here mainly where we get news is CNN or a local NBC or ABC affiliate for local news. I get all my news on the internet and sometimes I watch CSPAN and I also love the Daily show (it helps me stay sane).

At Least CNN Is Laughing All The Way To The Bank
FAUX get less advertising money than CNN since the hillbilly audience is such a limited market. CNN gets the benefit of the doubt from advertisers since it's assumed the networks attracts a more professional class of viewers.

6. CNN is doo-doo and their ratings are also WAY less than CBS

and NBC.

The "big networks" are still just that.

CNN is spin city central and I CANCELLED my cable TV because of it.

10. Cable's ratings less than broadcast?
What a surprise. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that you have to pay for CNN, wheras broadcast is free.

13. true, but (a) most Am. households now have at least basic cable
Edited on Thu May-12-05 09:22 AM by spooky3
or basic satellite and (b) Fox & CNN are usually in the basic package.

Edited to provide links:

From the same story Lynn linked above:

"But even in the limited sense of average hourly watchers, Fox is only No. 1 among 24-hour cable news channels. Fox , like CNN , now reaches about 4 of every 5 television households, so comparisons with broadcast news shows are increasingly valid. And among all television news sources, Fox 's performance is nothing to brag about."

12. CNN = Carnival News Network
As dubbed by my husband because when they have a breaking story, no matter how trivial it may be (i.e., Runaway Bride and Michael Jackson trial), they trip all over themselves to sensationalize it to the hilt. You know when they bring out The Blitzer that the show is about to start.

14. That is so true!
I'm forced to watch Faux on a daily basis b/c they have it on at my gym. At least the sound is off. But I notice that they run a lot of ads geared toward a lower income audience. Also ads for attorneys, DUI, criminal defense, and a LOT for accident and medical malpractice. What's up with freepers and the all the lawsuit lawyers? Aren't they supposed think that's frivolous?

16. Who's the voice for the Puke commercials on FOX?
Y'know, the ones where liberal Democrats are killing the senate, dissin' the fair vote on judges, etc? Maybe they're just on selected markets and nobody knows what I'm talking about, but I get them all the time.

He's got that wholesome, patriarchal voice. Been a voiceover for a lot of commercials for food products.

Can't you get them to change the channel? You pay for membership, right? I'd tell them to cut it out or I'd find another gym.

So it's 24 hours a day of anti-gay shit. It gets so old and oppressive.

26. I agree. When I lived with family, it was constant Faux
and Limbaugh. My father listened to Limbaugh every day. I sometimes wonder if all that hatred helped kill him. :( Then I worry about falling into the same trap.

27. I had a similar experience with my father
He started listening to all-night talk radio way back in the 1980's - conservative talk radio. He even got to where he would fall asleep with the earphone in his ear, so that spew was going into his brain while he was sleeping.

Then it escalated as talk radio got more and more hate-filled. He began listening to Rush Limbaugh and similar programs. He started watching Fox News 24 hours a day. There was a TV in every room in his house so he wouldn't miss anything.

He became utterly paranoid, convinced that he was going to be set upon by the criminals these people had him convinced were roaming the streets (which is ridiculous as he lived in a very rural location). He carried a Derringer in his pocket, and spouted whatever hatred Rush had puked up that day. He was getting older, and I'm convinced that listening to that garbage for twenty years had a lot to do with the deterioration of his brain.

And tragically, this was a well-educated man who had been a college professor. He voted for McGovern, way back when. I can remember when he was reasonably tolerant and had the attitude of live and let live. He became an embittered, fearful, hate-filled old man, believing the crap that he heard every day on the radio and on Fox. He became so paranoid that I was even worried about going to his house without calling first to be sure he knew it was me and not the rampaging hordes of criminals he was convinced were going to come and storm his castle, lest I get shot at as I pulled into the driveway.

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't witnessed it myself. Not in a million years.

28. Wow, that's incredibly sad. :(
It warped your dad's mind.

My dad was always hateful, so this just made him worse. He was paranoid, too, and always followed me around, claiming someone was going to get me. He would actually find out what time I planned to drive home from my college, get there before I set out and FOLLOW ME HOME. I caught him several times, but I was powerless to make him stop. He followed me everywhere...freaky.

I have no idea what triggered the excessive paranoia. The ironic thing is that the person I needed protection from most was my father himself!

When I would watch nature documentaries, he always had to scoff at the idea of evolution. Because of my fundy school, I now thirst for knowledge about evolution. It's so fascinating.

That's tough. My dad is not THAT bad. He has mellowed some and has actually always been a real-rightwinger, but a THINKING right-winger. Just had a real impatient, judgmental worldview. He worships money, too. The two tours of duty in Vietnam and then losing the war did a job on him, too.

4. I heard there's a difference in how each audience views as well
CNN viewers get their news and leave. They don't "bring a lunch" so to speak.

FOX News viewers have more of a relationship with the station, so often it's all they watch.

Well, with CNN being in third place, they are going to try to do whatever it takes to get back in it... no matter the cost.
