Nightline Story has me wondering why Limbaugh isn't in Prison
Edited on Wed May-11-05 10:58 PM by RamboLiberal
First segment on Nightline has a story of a poor guy who is doing 25 years in a FL prison for possession of prescription painkillers this guy desparately needed. They said he had so many he had to be dealing. Well then why the hell isn't Rush charged and doing 25? I emailed ABC and asked that.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/PainManagement/story?id=749207&page=1

Richard Paey went from being an Ivy League law school student to serving 25 years in a Florida prison after a long, strange and painful journey from surgical patient to state prisoner.

A car accident in 1985 led to long hospitalizations, surgeries and treatment, including metal screws in his spine that continue to cause debilitating pain.

<snip>

But authorities in Pasco County, Fla., contend otherwise. When he moved there, Paey did not know that the pharmacies where he filled prescriptions were under surveillance by local police and the DEA.

Florida prosecutor Scott Andringa built a case accusing Paey of forging prescriptions using the name of his former doctor in New Jersey. According to a search warrant, Paey had filled more than 200 prescriptions involving 18,000 pills in the space of about a year.

Paey maintains he never sold the drugs. "I think a true pain patient would never sell their medication," he said. "It's too hard to get."

1. You mean why he *isn't* in prison, don't you?
If not, when did El Rushbo go to prison?

2. It's simple really
He is rich and he helps promote the rightwing agenda. He more then likely has people to protect him.

8. damn you got my hopes up for a few seconds
He belongs in prison. But he'd probably find a way to broadcast from there too!

4. Because
1 (and most importantly) he is rich.
2 He is an RW-nut.
Why do you wonder?

5. BTW here's the part of the law that should have him wearing
a number. From the ABC article and covered on Nightline.

In Florida, the illegal possession of certain prescription painkillers — in amounts more than 28 grams, enough to fill less than two bottles — is considered drug trafficking. The penalty is equivalent to that meted out to hard-core heroin dealers — a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison. Prosecutors convinced a jury that Paey had forged enough prescriptions to qualify as a drug trafficker. He is barely a year into serving the sentence.

So come on FL DA - get off your butt and charge him already.

9. just to back up for a minute
this guy should NOT be in prison, to put Rush there too is not going help him or shorten his unjust sentence. I understand the sentiment, and Rush has been quoted as calling for harsh sentences for drug offenses. He is liar and a hypocrite and a drug addict, but I am one who thinks the prisons are not the place for drug offenders anyway.

flame away?

11. Exactly - for this type of offense neither should be in prison
but if Florida and the stupid Repukes are going to enforce these kind of stupid laws then El Rushbo should be doing the time and not get a pass.

12. well, I wouldn't be shedding tears
and I wouldn't make him the poster boy for reform of the war on (some) drugs either.

Maybe his zombies will think about it? Nah, that is probably asking too much.

16. In Texas you get less time impersonating a Doctor than you would
if you had forged a prescription. A person can pretend to be a Dr. and treat people and write prescriptions to them is a misdemeanor. To forge prescriptions yourself a felony. Go figure...

17. I don't want Rush in prison....
I want him in prison with a cellmate who's a large cruel man who thinks he's "cute".

Limbaugh has hurt this country so badly... he needs to see what it's like.

18. This would be a good question for White House
Wouldn't it make the war on drugs look good if a rich white guy got the same punishment for the same crime as some poor black guy?
