Police Will Urge Congressional Action to Help Stop Gun Violence

**holding a press conference

Law enforcement officers visiting Washington for National Police Week will tell Congress it's getting more dangerous for police on America's streets, not safer, because of new firearms that pack a devastating wallop and the return of formerly banned military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Unfortunately, instead of doing anything about the higher threat level, Congress is going in the opposite direction, preparing to move legislation that protects gun corporations from being held accountable for acts of negligence.

Two police officers who have been victims – one who was shot and nearly killed, another whose police officer son was murdered – will join representatives of police organizations and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), herself a victim of gun violence, at a press conference at 10 a.m. Thursday at the National Press Club to discuss these issues.
