(from a 53 yr old activist)
It actually brought tears to my eyes, as I remembered the civil rights movements, opposing the Vietnam war etc. and how people were courageous enough to put their bodies on the line in nonviolent civil disobedience and resistance.
Zinn states that Democracy CANNOT FUNCTION properly without
civil disobedience. The wealthy and powerful ALWAYS tip the scales against the common people and true Democracy.
How many today are brave enough to put their bodies on the line, risk arrest etc.?
History seems to demonstrate that unless the people are willing to take greater risks such as Martin Luther King Jr. and his supporters did, things are only going to get worse. That is a scary thought for me, as it seems the left in general has lost it's resolve and courage.

Civil Disobedience
by Henry David Thoreau - 1849
(Originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government")
"I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good. No other person has been more eloquent and passionate in getting this idea across than Henry David Thoreau. As a result of his writings and personal witness, we are the heirs of a legacy of creative protest." - Martin Luther King, Jr, Autobiography, Chapter 2
