-try to see it, if you can-

*****One of the finest, most thought provoking documentaries out there.

"What can I say that will in any way convey the love, respect, and admiration I feel for this unassuming hero who was my teacher and mentor, this radical historian and people-loving 'trouble-maker,' this man who stood with us and suffered with us? Howard Zinn was the best teacher I ever had, and the funniest."

YEAR
2004

77 MINS, Color/B&W

Teacher, activist, historian and author. Howard Zinn's personal journey took him from a bookless working-class flat in New York to a prestigious position at Boston University. For the past-half century, Zinn has been one of the leading voices of the American left, voicing opposition to American power abroad, championing civil rights at home and chronicling the history of working people. In a profile in courage and conviction, documentarians Deb Ellis and Dennis Mueller tell the inspiring story of Zinn's life and teachings. TVPG (AC) Stereo

3. some thoughts

(from a 53 yr old activist)

It actually brought tears to my eyes, as I remembered the civil rights movements, opposing the Vietnam war etc. and how people were courageous enough to put their bodies on the line in nonviolent civil disobedience and resistance.
Zinn states that Democracy CANNOT FUNCTION properly without civil disobedience. The wealthy and powerful ALWAYS tip the scales against the common people and true Democracy.

How many today are brave enough to put their bodies on the line, risk arrest etc.?

History seems to demonstrate that unless the people are willing to take greater risks such as Martin Luther King Jr. and his supporters did, things are only going to get worse. That is a scary thought for me, as it seems the left in general has lost it's resolve and courage.

Civil Disobedience
by Henry David Thoreau - 1849

(Originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government")

"I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good. No other person has been more eloquent and passionate in getting this idea across than Henry David Thoreau. As a result of his writings and personal witness, we are the heirs of a legacy of creative protest." - Martin Luther King, Jr, Autobiography, Chapter 2
