6. I figured...
it was Wile E. Coyote, and the grenade was one he bought from Acme Company, or it would have gone off.

13. As explosive ordnance goes
a manufactured hand grenade is one of the least likely to not detonate as designed.

It was a fake grenade or a poorly designed homemade explosive device.

In my (Useless but humble) opinion.

15. You have to wonder what they sought to accomplish
Hell, they don't tell us the news, they "manage" it. I don't think the world would have changed had they not revealed that someone didn't throw, but DROPPED, a "dummy" grenade amongst the crowd (that's the latest, BTW...it could change, yet again, in the intervening hours before the next official government explanation!).

Here's what I think the purpose of this little story was--they want America to focus on the Chimp's speech in Georgia. The only way they can get any network to replay clips from the speech is to attach an "event" to it.

See, we are supposed to get riled because someone threw a grenade at our fearless leader...but that ain't good, because it suggests that our Secret Service is incompetent or undermanned to protect our leader...and that ain't good, because we pedestrian Americans will focus on THAT, and not the speech....and that ain't good, because it doesn't advance the Chimp agenda...and that ain't good, because then the neocons don't get their way...and so on, and so on, and so on.

In the end, they buried the speech under a pile of shit of their own making.

They didn't think the whole thing through, frankly. They would have been better off doing their usual, which is to send out hoardes of "interesting and controversial" (read: insufferable assholes who make your blood boil) rightwingers to blanket the talk shows. The clips still would have been shown, and we would not be left with a feeling that our security apparatus for travelling senior leaders is somehow wanting.

Edited on Wed May-11-05 08:56 AM by leveymg
Your theory suggests a feeble-minded local attempt to help Bush with his sagging poll numbers. You may just be right about that.

When did it change from "pine cone" to "a device" to "a grenade?"

a last ditch effort to bring up the polls when he gets home by playing the "almost assassinated" card...

and he became confused, asking instead for a grenade.

(he was also humming the Mazda jingle at the time, but the buffoon thought it went " boom, boom, boom")

22. If *'s approval ratings continue to drop ...
... the incident will be blamed on Putin and his former KGB thugs (can't ya just here 'em now: "First they tried to poison Yeshenko and now THIS!"). * will then use it as a reason to rekindle the Cold War and add Russia to his "axis of evil" so he's got n excuse to raise the terror alert level again.

If that doesn't happen, Plan B is to allow Jeb to use the rallying cry "They tried to blow up my brother!" during his 2008 presidential campaign.

23. posted my theory yesterday
This was a Rovian plan to continue to keep attention on the ONE TRIP he took overseas where Bush wasn't pelted with rotting vegetables, burned in effigy or protested against in such large numbers that the host countries had to pay millions in extra security.
The whole scene -- the banners with that familiar "Mission Accomplished" look to them, the flags, the crowds -- it all had that Rove-manufactured feel to it.
So how to keep that great visual in the public eye -- what better foil than this "controversial" event that will be debated, while the background footage of Bush's "triumphant" trip runs continuously.

25. Jessica Lynch and the Plastic Xmas Turkey
Planted the grenade, and with the help of the runaway bride, got away safely via Greyhound and are now in Vegas, and are now plotting the abduction of Macauley Caulkin.

The grenade was disarmed when John Bolton plucked one of his moustache hairs and used it to re-pin the demonic device. He then chased it around the square, shouting and demanding that someone fire it.
