Authorities find missing ex-soldier blinded by Iraq blast

Associated Press

DUNBAR, Pa. - A former soldier blinded by shrapnel while serving in Iraq was found alive Tuesday night, a day after he disappeared after telling an ex-girlfriend he was depressed, police and his family said.

Sam Ross Jr., 23, of Dunbar Township, will be admitted to a veterans' hospital psychiatric unit for observation, his aunt, Tina Pifer, told The Associated Press.

Ross was found at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday near a water tower in a wooded area of the township, where he had built a small fire near a walking trail, Pifer said. He was taken to Highlands Hospital in Connellsville and was to be transferred to a veteran's hospital in Pittsburgh, she said.

Ross "didn't say much to anybody," after he was found, said Pifer, who spoke briefly with him. "He just said he wanted everybody to leave him alone and he didn't want to live anymore."

5. Runaway Bride gets 24/7 coverage. Runaway Wounded gets not so much.
Such are the priorities. At least he was found.

4. This is Sadly the Situation of a lot of our Guys
Go to any Veteran's Hospital. I guarantee you that you will find that the elderly vets willing to tell you stories of yesteryears has been replaced by a saddening disparaged youthful community. It's hard talking with these young men and women, because they had their lives ahead of them, and now no legs, eyes or arms. Regardless of the injuries, It's definitely a sad situation.

6. It's stories like this
that make you hate this administration so much more. And what the hell are they doing for them? Nothing!!! Kerry introduced a military family bill earlier last month or so and every republican but one voted against it. And I wonder where all this money that's going to this "war" is going to. It's certainly not going to the troops, so who else? Halliburton and in return returns to Bush. It's all a big circle. They get tax payer money for Halliburton. Certainly not our military which really pisses me off. I hope this man gets the help he needs. Right now he needs a lot of love and mental care.
