NIAGARA FALLS - Middleport residents and environmentalists waging an uphill battle against a pesticide manufacturer over arsenic contamination said Monday their fight just got a whole lot harder.
Christine Todd Whitman, the former head of the Environmental Protection Agency who refused to crack down on arsenic levels in drinking water, will serve as a consultant for the company, FMC Corp.
"It's absolutely wrong," said Susan Rydza, who lives three houses away with her husband, Gregory, and three children. "It's been a David and Goliath battle from the beginning, and it just got worse."
A dozen residents who live near the plant are suing FMC for allegedly failing to honor a 13-year agreement to decontaminate the area.
