http://tinyurl.com/ayzmtThe Post should be commended for it's editorial regarding subterfuge and concealment of the truth by the Bush Administration, but the editorial board could have hit one over the fence had it referenced the recently uncovered 2002 memos concerning the planning for the Iraq War as reported by the Times of London, Knight Ridder, Salon, numerous respected weblogs and others. The July 2002 memo confirms what was long known that the British Government had decided on war by mid-2002; that the evidence and intelligence was 'fixed around the policy' rather than the evidence determining the policy; that dislodging Saddam Hussein (misleadingly referred to as 'regime change') rather than disarmament was the key goal from the very beginning; that UN inspectors were seen from the outset as a public relations device rather than as a means of disarmament; that Britain (and the US) were trying to create a situation in which Baghdad would refuse to re-admit the inspectors, in order to create a political and legal justification for a war they were already committed to for other reasons; that Tony Blair and his ministers lied through their teeth.
The Post editors should also be ashamed of themselves for also failing to run any news stories about this proof that the Bush Administration not only lied to the American people and the world about it's war plans but it's continuing efforts to cover up this information. Smaller lies than these led to the resignation of Richard Nixon and to the impeachment of Bill Clinton.
The blood of American soldiers is being spilled on a daily basis as a direct result of the ongoing web of deceit and the mainstream media has an obligation to inform the American people of the truth. Exposure of these facts by many media outlets is foregone in order to not upset the corporate supporters of the administration which are gorging themselves at the public trough while the country is preoccupied with Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, Terry Schiavo and a ridiculous plan to eliminate Social Security that will never come to pass. Shame on the media and shame on all of us for not doing more to change the status quo.
