RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — There are some 144,000 unmarried couples living together in North Carolina, and they are all breaking the law — a statute that has been on the books since 1805.
The law against cohabitation is rarely enforced. But now the American Civil Liberties Union is suing to overturn it altogether, on behalf of a former sheriff's dispatcher who says she had to quit her job because she wouldn't marry her live-in boyfriend.
Deborah Hobbs, 40, says her boss, Sheriff Carson Smith of Pender County, near Wilmington, told her to get married, move out or find another job after he found out she and her boyfriend had been living together for three years. The couple did not want to get married, so Hobbs quit.

1. Sounds like lawsuit time to me
It sure as hell is selective enforcement, for starters...

2. Why aren't they closing down retirement homes in NC?
Don't retirees living in groups count among the co-habitating?

3. My partner and I have been together for 10 years and aren't married
We're a hetero couple with no intentions of tying the knot. We haven't encountered any discrimination because of that, but people do ask a lot of very personal questions and we do get a lot of pressure from friends and acquaintances to get married. One acquaintance of ours, who's quite the homophobe, asked us why we simply didn't get married and my partner said, "Well, we were going to do it, but then they started letting gay people get married and we figured, 'Hey, this whole marriage thing has just lost all meaning,' so why bother?"

The homophobe looked at my partner and said, "That's ridiculous," and my partner goes, "No kidding,". About 30 seconds of silence later, during which you could see the gears turning in this guy's tiny little head, he got it.

7. If you get a chance, can you post this in NC State Forum?
Make sure the folks there see it, too.
