Atlanta’s Police Chief to Reopen Infamous Child Murders Investigation

Date: Sunday, May 08, 2005
By: BlackAmericaWeb.com

Wayne Williams, the black man believed to be responsible for a series of murders that terrorized Atlanta two decades ago, has always maintained his innocence. Now, Dekalb County Police Chief Louis Graham has reopened an investigation into the murders, adding that he, too, believes Williams may have been set up.

Graham said he plans to take another look at the slayings of four boys between February and May 1981. Graham, who became chief last year, said he took an interest in revisiting the cases, dubbed the Atlanta Child Murders, after looking through some old news clippings.

“After Wayne Williams was arrested, there was this decision by some people to close the cases, and I have never been one to espouse that kind of investigation or paint that kind of broad brush,” Graham told Associated Press. “I have never believed that he did anything.”

8. Really?
From what I read, he drove over a bridge where someone heard a splash, there were some fibers that maybe might have matched (a common carpet fiber) and that's about it.

I don't know if he did or he didn't, but I think it's worth opening the case again and taking another look.

We know that sometimes there's pressure to close a case prematurely, esp a high-profile case.

19. Then apparently you know something that no one else does....
...Since Williams was never even CHARGED with murdering those kids.

He was convicted of DIFFERENT crimes, wih NO real evidence, and then the cops simply claimed he killed the kids and closed the cases.

There were enough " procedural errors" in his trial to grant him an automatic release in any CIVILIZED nation. It was a BULLSHIT case from start to finish.

3. awful afro alright
there has always been a shadow over the case, i remember that. it seems odd the chief coming out with it suddenly. i'd have never dreamed of it being re-opened.

15. BTK looks pretty guilty
They didn't have evidence this strong when they tried Wade Williams.

17. Was responding to
"But there is the fact that there have been no murders since he was arrested."

How long had it been since he fired up again? Lack of activity doesn't "prove" anything.

9. Cold-case squad to probe decades-old Atlanta murders
http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/05/07/wayne.williams/index.html

(CNN) -- Saying he believes the man presumed responsible for most of the 29 Atlanta-area murders of boys, young men and two girls between 1979 and 1981 is innocent, a police chief plans to reopen four murder cases.

"Quite frankly, I don't think Wayne Williams is responsible for anything," DeKalb County Police Chief Louis Graham said. "I don't think he did anything. I made up my mind with that 20 years ago, and I still feel that way."

Graham has formed a cold-case squad to look into four young men slain in DeKalb County, east of downtown: Patrick Baltazar, 11; Curtis Walker, 13; Joseph Bell, 15; and William Barrett, 17. They were all killed between February and May 1981.

"At this point, there are just too many open questions," said Graham, who was a member of the multi-agency task force that led to Williams' arrest. "And all I'm trying to do is answer those questions as best we can."

10. That's so great that they're looking into this
The case against WW was weak at best, IMHO. I also found it
suspicious that an African American, who didn't fit the profile
of a child or serial killer, was ultimately the chief suspect.

14. I always wonder if he was the guy.
For him to tangle with and kill all the older guys was weak. He didn't look to be a strong guy, imo.

22. If he is guilty of one or two of them, I could
accept that. But There are just too many murders and IMHO, they should have all been looked at one at a time.

there could have been copycat killers out doing some if not most of the murders.

23. Yes, I recall that when he was arrested and announced as the
killer, my reaction was, "Huh?"

He didn't set off my pretty accurate creep detector the way Ted Bundy or Charles Manson or even Aileen Wuornos did.
