A Democratic Mother's Day card
Mom,

I wish for you free health care when you are at the beginning of your journey as a Mother and health care coverage throughout your pregnancy. I know you want to deliver the healthiest baby that you can.

I wish for you free health care for your kids. I know you want the kids to get their checkups, their glasses, their braces, etc. If God has given you a burden of a child in poor health, I want them to have not only the proper doctors, medications, procedures, and hospitalizations but also some home health care to give you some relief at home.

I want free birth control and abortions. You must be able to control your body the way that you want.

I wish for you good schools for your kids with proper after school activities including funding for sports, arts, and music. I want you to be able to send your kids to school without worry from violence.
I want community college guaranteed to all kids at an affordable level. I want college guaranteed to every kid who wants to go.

I want parks and community centers for you and your kids. I want the National Parks kept up properly. It is our legacy to future generations.

I want a restructuring of the work force such that you can have a real work/life balance. I want the right of re-entry into the workforce so that you can take years off and transition easily into the career of your choice. I want an end to the glass ceiling. I want men to stop pushing women into dead end portions of their fields. I want to see female professionals and managers and executives over 40. I want a re-evaluation of women's career decisions and pay structure of typically female jobs... You should be able to support a family on your salary without living in poverty.

I want there to be a real choice in terms of work vs staying at home. I want stay at home Mom's to have community support so that they are not so lonely at home and the ability to take some break from child care/housework. I want real wages to rise so that making ends meet on one salary is not so hard.

I want your husbands to truly take on the burdens of housework. Not just piddling around on the weekends. I want working hours cut to 40 hours a week so that a man has the energy to take on more of your work. Sorry, if you are working 60-80 hours a week, you are not sharing the housework. You just arent there. I want men to truly look at how much work you do around the house and thank you for it by helping you out.

I want free health care for you to take care of middle aged problems of menopause, breast cancer, etc.

I want a dignified old age for you. You deserve it. I want Medicare/Medicaid and nursing homes covered. I want aggressive research on Alzheimers (we empty half the nursing homes). I want Social Security for you. I want home care so that if you want to stay in your home and can afford it, you can do so. I want pensions protected. I dont want you to lose your home to increasing medical costs. You and your husband worked hard for it.

I cant imagine the debate on Social Security as being cast as a battle between "seniors" and "youth". In my family, we dont think of ourselves as seniors, boomers, or youth. We think of ourselves as Mom and Pop, kids and grandkids. I know you dont want to strip your kids...you dont want to deny them of anything... I know your kids understand how much you sacrificed for them and want you to end your days in dignity.

My Mother's Day present is to work hard within the Democratic party to make sure these things happen for you.

Happy Mother's Day,
Your kids

Do you have to turn EVERYTHING into a political discussion. Geesh!

Love,
Mom

(on edit: very good letter, but this would be my mom's response... I have heard it before from her :) )

2. That's cute! I wish my
Mum were still around so I could have these political discussions with her..I know she'd feel the same as I.

She passed on in '97..way too soon for all of this!

3. "Can't we just have a nice meal together without someone bringing
up POLITCS? For once? Please, for your mom?!"

I can hear it now...

Great letter though.

5. Dear Mom,
The politics has become personal...and the personal has become politicized. We must regain our family values...What are family values if they do not include upholding and uplifting the material and spiritual conditions of our Mothers? Our Mothers are the pillars of our family and our communities. Our Mothers are taking on the burdens where government and society has failed us. Can you imagine how many bake sales are being held to cover things that we used to take for granted -- everything from personal armor for our troops in Iraq, to sports teams (that used to be state funded) to medical care for people suffering from expensive illnesses.

Our gift to you is a little help. We want to lighten your load.

Your Kids.
