Driving home as the sun set in a desert Southwest twilight, listening for the first time to Springsteen's "Devils & Dust," I was hit full on with the force of the idea that we are the ones who love this country. The other side loves another country, which they would make of ours. We love THIS country as it was envisioned by the Founders, as it has been, and should be.
The worst this country can be is the greed exemplified by the Texas zillionaires who funded the Swiftboat Veterans, and the hatred and intolerance of the TV preachers, and the self-serving cowardice of what should be our free press. The best we can be can be found in Springsteen's words and music, in Garrison Keillor's homespun humor and wisdom this afternoon on NPR, in Woody Guthrie's reminder that this land is your land, and my land, all the way from California to the New York island.
One day I copied some words I found here at DU -- I don't know the source -- and posted them above my desk: "They" pledge allegiance to the flag, but they hate the Republic for which it stands.
