That would be a profoundly reassuring message if Europe were still Christian, but it's not. Eurosecs prevail from one end of the continent to the other — everywhere save, perhaps, in Poland. And in Europe, it's not just the elites who are post-Christian. The people are too. Christian faith is dying in Europe, along with the formerly Christian population. Eurosecs may be active fornicators but they're not fruitful, and their numbers are dwindling. The new Pope, Benedict XVI, is determined to change that. He's all for reaching out to Africa, Asia, and Latin America, but he chose the name Benedict for a reason. He's not about to give up on Christianity in its ancient home. Look for a major effort to re-evangelize the continent, and reconnect the people of Europe to their Christian roots. Eurosecs may snicker at the pope's mission impossible, but all men of good will should wish him well. If he succeeds, Europe may yet learn to reject Jew hatred and join John Paul II in embracing the people who gave the world monotheism as "our elder brothers."

In the long meantime, the safety of the Jewish people and the fate of the Jewish state will be decided where most great questions are decided today: in America. The great, unspoken question is whether these things will be decided by secular America or by Christian America. Secular America is a lot like secular Europe, but to a lesser degree. In postmodern Amerisec circles, outright demonization of Israel is often restricted to everybody's favorite whipping boys — "the settlers" — but the essential view of Israel and the Jews is the same, and many postmodern Jews share it. The great difference here is that this is still an overwhelmingly Christian country: Amerisecs predominate only among our elites.

Of course, those elites are sprinkled with groups like the National Council of Churches — Eurosecs with crosses who worship Abu Mazen and Fidel Castro — but the overwhelming majority of Christians in this overwhelmingly Christian nation are not like that. They worship Jesus of Nazareth, and they read the Bible. And, although Catholics are an important part of the mix, Protestants outnumber them. The largest, most rapidly growing category of Protestants are Evangelicals, and that, too, bodes well for the survival of the Jews.

1. you brting up some good points, B.

I was SO surprised when I found out that of the world's major religions, Christianity is on the decline. Islam is definitely increasing (mostly from population growth). Hindusim is huge, for the same reason. I don't know about Buddhism.

There's something really strange about the Jews' relationship to Xtianity. I've read a little bit about the Armageddon BS, and it says that the Christians will convert the Jews in the 11th Hour, OR ELSE. Just weird. No wonder there are so many atheists.

Wow. It looks like National Review is fully on board the Theocratic Express. No Constitution for them - the USA is an instrument of God's Will for Real Estate Allocation. If it says it in The Bible, then America's foreign policy should do it.

4. As a Jew, who has been a member of Reform and Reconstructionist

Synagogues I find this article incredible. 75% of Jews voted for Kerry, in spite of the fact that many received nice tax cuts. But I guess we are all the POSTMODERN JEWS who are in league with the Amerisecs.

I resent their obvious equivalence of "love of Israel" and "endorsing whole heartedly Sharon's government. As a mother, I know that every Hebrew school in the country tries to build genuine links to Israel - Orthodox, Conservative, Reform or Reconstructionist ones. (The Shalom Sesame - the US/Israel version of Sesame Street - does too). I can love my country and detest my President, why can't we have similar feelings for Israel.

I felt much safer in the nice secular, pluralist world that I lived in. The shift to a theocracy is scary on so many levels. I find their position that they are the ones who can provide us safety to be outrageous. Their goal is to do what they want and it is not for us - no matter what they say! Although it shows my generation, my reaction to this is to remember the scene in Hard Day's Night, when a crusty businessman after arguing about whether the Beatles could play a radio, snorts "I fought the war for your sort." John Lennon, moves in very close, glares at him and says "Bet you're sorry you won, then".

5. The far-right fundie types seem to view "The Jews" as a symbol

They pay a lot of lip service and profess "love" for "The Jews" as an objectified, abstracted entity, while seeming to care very little for individual Jews as human beings. I find this objectification...well, more than a little creepy and disturbing.
