CNN'S Larry King Live: Lauren Becall says "I'm a Proud Liberal Democat!"
Edited on Sat May-07-05 09:44 AM by AuntiBush
CNN's "Larry King Live," which aired last night had Lauren Bacall on. Well, ole' Larry shouldn't have went there with Ms. Bacall because she let him have it! As she flung her hair back, holding her head steadfast, proud and high she made sure Larry King, CNN, and all his viewers know she was a "proud Democrat!" Adding, "and damn proud of it!" She said staunchly that "she was open-minded," as she spread her arms wide in a "make fun of Larry and all Republicans" manner. I was smiling ear to ear by then... ;)

Oh, but she didn't stop there. Oh no. When Larry begun to mutter FDR under his breathe, Lauren told him "not to go there," continuing that she did "not” tolerate anyone saying (my words) crap about FDR. She talked about the disgrace of what's going on in this country now. Larry was doing his best to kindly-counter attack her with questions obviously pre-scripted, as he read them from a white sheet below him on the table. But, Ms. Lauren Bacall kept firing back. He even had the "NEVER" and "STUPIDITY" to state to her, "Well, aren’t you rich!?!" Again, she fired back at him adamantly stating "no!" Adding that's why she is still working.

At one point, Larry brought-up how she worked with John Wayne, a known Republican. Well, again Ms. Bacall, with all her dignifiedly grace retorted back how she had reservations working w/him, but on the set he never once brought up politics. When he tried to get her to give some dirt on the few Hollywood elite she didn't like or get along with she refused to name names

Proving to be a beacon for all of us "Democrats," "Liberals or not," last night Lauren Bacall taught me how to hold my head-up and never, ever be afraid speak-out for who I am or what it's all about. At one point I swear Larry King mentioned the word "Socialist" to her... she gave him that "don't go there" sneer. Matter-of-fact, she used that phrase several times with him.

Though it was overly obvious CNN with Larry King's aid did not invite this wonderfully dignified true actress on the show to talk about he new book, "Alone, and some..." in the end she gave those watching more then a thing-or-two to remember when fighting a dictatorship, fascist republican bunch. No, Lauren Bacall's words were more significant than that. I know I was holding my head high like she did last night. And never again will I ever allow an arrogant, mean-spirited, closed-minded SOB ever make me feel being a Democrat with the "L" word attached is anything to ashamed of.

Think I'll grab some of Lauren Bacall's movies now out on DVD'S... yeah; I have a new hero today. Thanks Ms. Lauren Bacall. I always did admire you. Since she's given me hope and instilled pride within me, if anyone has anything bad to say about Ms. Bacall, "you'd better not go there" with me anymore.

So, for all you FReepers out there that like to get in our faces, labeling us as "liberals" like it's a dirty word: "Don't go there anymore with me." I'm defending it with dignity and honor from now on!

Don't like Gays? Well, don't go there.
Don't like Blacks? Well, don't go there.
Don't like women's rights? Well, don't even go there.
Wanna call me a "Liberal," and a "Democrat." Well, just don't even go there.
Wanna spin your Rethuglican rhetoric my way, don't go there!

And, for all you Right-Wing Religious Fundie Crackpots (Frist/Delay included), shut-up and stop ruining our country cause you know you really shouldn't go there with Americans.

Thanks Ms. Bacall, from the bottom of this worn-torn Democratic heart.

3. It was Un-Believable!
Like they tried to use her for other purposes. The whole time the air showed, underneath her were the words "Outspoken Laren Bacall, blab, blab, blab."

When she was done CNN exec's were probably sweating as much as Larry King.

5. It was by pure accident because I DO NOT Watch CNN, FOX, etc.
Flipping w/the remote, I lucked out. Because as a rule, I no longer watch CNN, FOX, ABC and the rest. It's time we stop calling these stations "News or Mainstream Media," as they are nothing but trash mags on the tube.

I'm going to Tuesday Morning and buy something!!!

I don't want to see their sales drop one iota for any reason. We can't have them using that as a cover for dropping her as their spokesperson.

As a matter of fact, we should all e-mail them and say something really wonderful about Lauren Bacall in their ads and hearing her voice recording in the stores when we shop. You know the wingnuts are right now, contacting Tuesday Morning to complain about her.

54. Mary, that was a great idea. We went today and smacked Bushco*
Sparkly and I went and spent almost $200. When we got to the checkout line, I said the clerk (who happened also to be the store manager) "We're here because Laren Bacall sent us. She was on Larry King last night, slapping Bush around. And we like that."

She smiled quite broadly, but made no comment. I said that she should make sure management knows their spokesperson's getting it done for them.

I also sent an e-mail to them:

custserv@tuesdaymorning.com

Your spokesperson, Lauren Bacall, was on CNN's Larry King Show recently. When on, she made some statements about her politics and her views on the state of our country. Her views may well have been taken as being quite partisan. I wanted you to know that she spoke for my wife and me and we are in full agreement with her.

As a sign of that, we went to our local Tuesday Morning, in Ellicott City, Maryland, today and spent about $200. We did this as a way to counter any disagreement with her that you may hear from those who don't agree with her views. I know a company like yours can be seen as supportive of their spokespersons. If you are, you'll have our business for a long time. I wanted you to know that and to know that's why we visited a Tuesday Morning today.

For us, its personal.

Thanks for listening ... and if you get flack about her comments from the other side, please keep in mind that the majority of Americans agree with her. I hope you'll stay with her.

10. About 2 years ago I sat next to King in Nate n Al's restaurant in Beverly
Hills... he routinely goes there in the morning for breakfast.

I was quite loud in proclaiming what an ass bush is, and how I believed he was involved in 911... I conversed routinely with my breakfast partner, not in hysterics at all, and discussed facts, about the events, but just slightly louder than normal so he would overhear us.

I made sure he heard the names of the felons in the white house, about neil and jeb bush's affairs and crimes too.

Then left without a backwards glance.

I should do that more often.

Have you seen her early movies? When people talk about what an American beauty is, I never think of young, modern actresses/celebs...they all look alike to me. I think about the young Lauren Bacall and Kate Hepburn, they had classic beauty with personalities to match. Guess I'm getting older than dirt, but they don't make 'em like they used to.

24. She Is the Greatest!
I also made it a point to catch Lauren Bacall on Larry King last night, even though I can't stand the creepy, woman-hating King either. She is always worth listening to, a real intelligence, and her comments on politics and fighting back against Republican lies and smears should be taped and studied. You cannot intimidate her with "liberal" or anything else, she does not fall for any of that. I remember some years ago when Bob Dole was on another one of these "attack 'liberals' " routines, the kind that would've made Clinton shrink, and Bacall was asked I think on Charlie Rose, (who actually is a good interviewer) if she was a liberal or how she would answer Dole, something like that, and she said yes, she most certainly was a liberal and would not back down from that, and then she started taunting Dole--that wonderful way she does--"You ever notice Bob Dole always says everything three times? Liberal, liberal, liberal..," which Dole had been doing. Then she said again that she was a liberal--"Liberal, liberal, liberal," for emphasis. She is the model for how these things should be answered; she throws it right back in their faces, but with friendly class. I want to get old the way Lauren Bacall has--she is still a young spirit and mind, and she was a favorite of my Mom's.

A lot of people of that generation had that "Liberal--I'll give you liberal; we built this country. Everything good in this country came from liberals" attitude that would not tolerate the kind of idiotic slander we listen to now. As it happens, there is an Article on this website that you can click on, on the home page, about something I have wondered about for years, as we listen to these phony Republican assholes attacking us, with no answer from the current group. I have thought that if the Roosevelts, Truman, or Lyndon Johnson were around, none of them would tolerate this shit, Repubs would get blasted every time they attacked us--with really choice language--and it would stop. It is called "Why FDR Would Spit in Bush's Eye." That whole generation of great liberal Democrats had that attitude, and we should study it and get it back. They didn't need phony "framing"--they knew who they were, and they fought!

This also reminds me of an actually wonderful tribute program a few years ago, when the great Gregory Peck died, (also on Larry King), and it had many great old time Hollywood "real Democrats," and one, June Lockhart, (if you are of a certain age, you know she is "everybody's Mom," because of "Lassie" on TV), talked about how sad it was to lose "a really good Democrat," as Peck was. Besides being close friends and missing them personally, this generation had a real civic sense, and knew even right away what a loss it was to the country to lose any good, real Democrat. They are liberals--proud, clear, moral, fighting--right down to the core, and they know, (and will not be fooled), who the enemy is. This is why Hollywood was great then--these were smart, conscientious adults, and good people, and there were lots of famous Hollywood or TV liberal Democrats then, before the corporate massacre. Now the only really deep, smart adult I can think of that I really respect this way is Whoopi Goldberg, who doesn't get good roles anymore.

She really is one of the all time great movie stars from an era I still prefer because the writing was better, even though before my time, and had one of the great Hollywood marriages with Humphrey Bogart. Her first book, "By Myself" was a huge bestseller and very well-written, and I will check this one, too. I wish a lot of people acted like her, and not only movie stars.

King had Karen Hughes on and she starts saying that Shrub hit a Home Run etc. and Larry goes..."Your hair looks great!"

Of course, her hair has NEVER looked great....but whatever, it was all so bizarre. My husband and I looked at each other, turned the TV off and that was pretty much the end of CNN and especially Larry King. He's just BIZARRE! I am inspired greatly by this post.

I just got back from a fast out of town daytrip, and had to rush to get that post out this morning before leaving. It's making my day right now reading how so many of you understood what I was trying to say.

Sorry about the typos: I spelled Democrat as Democat (meow...)

As many of you have posted, "we have to" study, read, and comprehend," Ms. Lauren Bacall's words, actions and her responses last night because now we're faced with own injustices and craziness out to destroy us limb by limb, and so quickly. We've been taken over by a minority that's filled with hatred and disdain for anything or one that even appears remotely happy and wise.

Talk about the perfect inspiration... there she was on Larry King Live proving she was better then all of them, CNN included. If we don't learn fast from the Becalls still among us, we're doomed for failure.

We need to "feel it again." You know. She, Bogie and many during her era stood tall, fearless, together with the utter confidence that they "knew" who they were and what "they" stood-for as those they tried to shut-up them, obviously failed.

Let us remember this right here and right now that: "those that live in the past are doomed to repeat it," regarding the destruction of nations during our worlds past, which includes thousands of years of unwashable history leaving many empires in ruin. Rather, there is so much more to learn from those that did "live it," like Ms. Bacall, coming out sound, dignity intack, and with great power.

By learning from the Laurens' from her era, which in no way is over yet - oh no, not by a long-shot Rethuglicans & FReepers because we're gonna grab hold of their strengths, and dignities shouting "liberal, liberal, liberal - yeah and what of it," till you figure out that we're not going away, regardless of how you steal our elections, our religion and civil rights.

Nope. We're going to stay right here, heads held high, smile and watch your side hang yourselves one more time for history's sake.

Edited on Sat May-07-05 04:56 PM by AuntiBush
And here's the link: Enjoy all! It was a wonderful trip. You should have seen ole Larry's face in his hands, repeatedly :)

(snip)

KING: Are you big a "D" Democrat? Do you...

BACALL: I'm a total Democrat. I'm anti-Republican. And it's only fair that you know it. Even though...

KING: Wait a minute. Are you a liberal?

BACALL: I'm a liberal. The L word!

KING: Egads!

BACALL: I love it. Being a liberal is the best thing on earth you can be. You are welcoming to everyone when you're a liberal. You do not have a small mind. Little picayune things. You want to welcome everyone. Liberal, little picayune thing.

KING: You're open to...

BACALL: You want to welcome everyone. Liberal, I'm a Roosevelt. I'm a -- and I hear anyone say anything about FDR...

KING: You're a new dealer, fair dealer.

BACALL: I'm a total -- and I was a kid and I'm total, total, total liberal and proud of it. And I think it's outrageous to say the l word. I mean, excuse me. They should be damn lucky that they were liberals here. Liberals gave more to the population of the United States than any other group.

49. first of all, thank you for posting this. i'd seen the billing for Lauren
Bacall on Larry King tonight and thinking that she was a Bush shill, i didn't bother to watch it. NOW I AM SORRY.

Thank you also for these words,

"never again will I ever allow an arrogant, mean-spirited, closed-minded SOB ever make me feel being a Democrat with the "L" word attached is anything to ashamed of."

ENTIRE REVOLUTIONS BEGIN WITH WORDS LIKE THAT ... WHEN PEOPLE ARE NO LONGER AFRAID TO STAND UP FOR TRUTH, FOR WHAT IS RIGHT AND FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN.

and thirdly ... do you know who made the word LIBERAL an evil, pooped up, taboo word?

POPPY, POPPY, POPPY ... that old evil old bush man when he was running against michaek dukakis way back in l988 and we have let him smear his foul smelling shit attack of the world liberal on us like we are afraid ... when we need to be PROUD of the word LIBERAL and all that it stands for and some of these senators in the senate today better start becoming proud of the word LIBERAL AGAIN or these UNITED STATES WILL BE DOOMED FOREVER.

anyhoo, thank you for your wonderful post.

LIBERAL IS NOT A DIRTY WORD, though Bush Sr tried to condition the narrow-minded to believe as much all in the name of "power," "money," and "politics." Not for the American people! So, say it with conviction. Don't let them toss it in your face like it's some foul-smelling bad word.

Irony at it's worse is watching those like Pat Buchanan, Fallwell, Robertson, Hannity, O'Reilly and that Ann Coulter "USE" their liberities (liberal/liberalism) to their own vocal $advantage$!

No. I won't shun it any longer. If anyone wishes to label me a Liberal I'll hold my head-up high like Ms. Bacall and proclaim as much with a "and... so... what of it...!?!"

P.S. Like Ms. Bacall, I too am "sick" of them using FDR! It's on Yahoo's main page right now and guess who's knocking him now about WWII and how he divided Europe - you guess it, the Smirkin Chimp! How dare he!

Snip from yahoo

1 hour, 17 minutes ago

RIGA, Latvia - Second-guessing Franklin D. Roosevelt,
President Bush said Saturday the United States played a role in Europe's painful division after World War II — a decision that helped cause "one of the greatest wrongs of history" when the Soviet Union imposed its harsh rule across Central and Eastern Europe. Bush said the lessons of the past will not be forgotten as the United States tries to spread freedom in the Middle East.

"We will not repeat the mistakes of other generations, appeasing or excusing tyranny, and sacrificing freedom in the vain pursuit of stability," the president said. "We have learned our lesson; no one's liberty is expendable. In the long run, our security and true stability depend on the freedom of others."

Bush singled out the 1945 Yalta agreement signed by Roosevelt in a speech opening a four-day trip focused on Monday's celebration in Moscow of the 60th anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat.

61. Really... but don't you get it!
King hung himself, CNN, and everything the NeoCon's stand for: MONEY!

In other words, King was saying "what's up with that Lauren, after all, you're rich, right?!?" And like you said, it should have nothing to do with anything.

Thanks for noticing. Of course, CNN's transcripts are not complete by a longshot. Their site says they placed the transcripts there in a rush.

67. Sorry I missed that, and I do recommend Bacall films.
It sounds as though Bacall was reminding King of how it used to be concerning FDR. My father, a Republican, recalled that FDR was "practically worshipped" during his terms of office, and the late Alistair Cooke recalled pretty much the same thing.

And as for Hollywood and politics, I can tell you that although there were and are right-wingers in power in Hollywood (despite current and past whining), there were and are plenty of extremely talented progressives. A lot of the finest actors of yesteryear were liberals. Check out John Garfield, for example.

Lauren Bacall films SHOULD NOT BE MISSED. In case you're wondering where to start, I'd recommend To Have and Have Not, which Turner Classic Movies runs fairly often (as they did tonight). You can get it on DVD, too.

Designing Woman (Bacall with Gregory Peck) is also out on DVD, if I recall correctly.

Do see:

Key Largo
The Big Sleep

I also loved A Foreign Field, a film about D-Day veterans returning to France 50 years on, which Bacall made about 10 years ago. Her co-stars were Alec Guinness, Leo McKern, Jeanne Moreau, and the blacklistee John Randolph.

Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Susan Sarandan, Tim Robbins...So many terrific, talented, LIBERAL lights in our cinematic history!!

I'll never understand why Freeper types trust rich people voting themselves more breaks, instead of those who are willing to pay more to benefit our country as a whole. They are the true patriots. "Profit Above All" people are just selfish, fascists, or worse.

Major hypocracy! Freepers don't like it when the truth is told by those with intellect. No, they'd rather we shut-up, and get out of their way.

All in the name of poor Jesus. Funny, you rarely, if ever at all here them mention "God."

Poor God, huh.

72. When one thinks that these great stars "risked" their very livelihoods
For fellow Americans during that era, and didn't get paid a dime to do so, unlike the filthy-Anti-American Talking Spin Heads on our trash-tubed-media today, it gives one great pause.

They could have been branded forever. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, and Peck, and so many others "back then" could have lost their jobs, reputations, you name it. But they stood-up for civil rights, galantly at that.

There is a lot we can learn from those that survived that past. An awfully lot to learn, regardless of what one post claimed to her treatment of others. We're all only human, and have all had one of those moments.

83. Awesome!
I've never been ashamed of my beliefs both spiritual and political and would never let someone demonize what I believe and when they attack and go after the greatest president FDR then I get very upset and almost protective. I know how much my grandfather loves FDR so it means even more to me because my grandfather is the best. :) We have to stop being ashamed of being who we are. The republicans aren't ashamed so why should we? We have to show our leaders we can be proud of being a democrat/liberal and to take back the good name of being both. The republicans have turned it into an evil thing which isn't true. Being democratic is beautiful and I love it. Thanks to her for being proud!
