You know, there are doctors on DU and doctors' wives as well, like me for instance.
We owe over $175K for med school. Try living with that for awhile on any income. David worked his ass off in med school, practically had a nervous breakdown, took a break, went back, and graduated with honors in some of his rotations. I'm damn proud of him. They literally cover ten times the amount covered in med school curricula just thirty years ago--and they have the same amount of time to do it in.
We managed to survive residency, or as I call it, three years of hell. David averaged 80 work weeks, meaning 120 hours, really much of the time, leaving me to raise our children pretty much by myself. He got paid just enough to keep us out of the hole permanently, but we're still paying off debt we took on just to survive then, and we're going to be paying it off for a long time.
Do I know greedy bastards in medicine? Yup. Do I know awesome doctors who do anything for patients, not caring the hours or the cost? Hell, yeah, I'm married to one. There are more of those than you think. Specialists get paid really, really well for the most part, but generalists, like my internist hubby, get paid worse. We're fine with that, as David's the happiest I've ever seen him in his job and the hours are more manageable (at least he's often below 80 for once in our marriage). He's finally really getting to know our children, and that's the best part.
David spends hours every week fighting for his patients with insurance companies, other doctors, nurses, family members, and often the patients themselves. He is more pissed off than you can imagine that we don't have a national health care plan, and he wears his Dean pin proudly on his lab coat. Makes for interesting conversations, apparently. David's a member of the AMA just so he can keep an eye on them, as we all know they're evil. Hell, most doctors aren't even members, they hate the AMA so much. And don't get him started on Pharma!
I know many here at DU are quick to blame doctors for everything, but they forget that there are doctors here who are living and breathing in our broken system. Don't piss on them when they're on fire--help them out!
