TX repuke (Nixon) tries to get bill passed barring booze @ strip clubs.
Edited on Fri May-06-05 04:47 PM by Bouncy Ball
No link up yet, just happened today, apparently.

The republican (naturally) who sponsored it said he has to drive past these places on his way to church, so he's going to shut them down.

And I guess he figures the fastest way is to take away the alcohol.

There will be more than a few everyday repukes who will be pissed off if this passes in the Senate.

Edit, link at bottom of thread. Amendment was tabled. Lots of information on this at link.

I am from Illinois, where titty bars a few and far between. Not too many whacky fundie types around here either, as ex-Senator candidate Alan "I'm Shakin'it" Keyes will attest.

But I also used to travel quite a bit to the south (VA, NC GA and TX in particular).

I tell you what. There is almost a titty bar in every strip mall (oops! no pun intended). You have your classy titty bars, in old car dealerships and such, and you have your "knife and gun club" titty bars, just hole-in-the wall dives.

It seems to me there is a direct relationship to titty bars and bible thumping Republicans, per capita.

3. Ohio has had laws like this for years
There are juice bars at which the strippers can be toppless and wet bars where they can't. I am surprised TX hasn't had a law like this.

8. Hilarious. Yeah, the customers are going for the alcohol
There used to be (may still be) no-alcohol strip bars in Oregon, so they could get the 18-year-old market. They did a nice business.

People tend to like to drink as they watch a woman humiliate herself in front of a bunch of horny men.

This comming from a horny man who doens't like to go to strip clubs because I find them boring because I DON'T DRINK.

12. Bouncy Ball, I love you, but this is a cruel joke.
I was in Texas frequently over a two year period in the early 90's. That's when you could drive around with a mixed drink in your hand as long as you were not drunk. I do recall some of the artistic dancing establishments (gave a whole new meaning to Western style chaps).

You are toying with us, foisting a cruel joke, trying to make us believe the Sun rises in the West.

This is very good but my entire world view will have to be adjusted if I know that Texans have finally allowed this sort of thing to happen.

Think of all the Dallas and Houston college students who will be out of a job as artistic dancers, well strippers?

Not funny.

21. Ruh-Roh!
Amendment got tabled!

http://www.statesman.com/news/content/shared/tx/legislature/stories/05/6House.html

A Houston Republican who complained that he must pass six topless bars on his way to church offered a proposal that would have barred selling, consuming or possessing alcohol in sexually oriented businesses.

Saying Houston is becoming known as "the topless capital of America," Rep. Joe Nixon acknowledged, "I'm trying to shut these places down."

Nixon offered his proposal as an amendment to House Bill 2544, which keeps the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission as a state agency but directs it to focus more on enforcement of alcohol laws that affect public safety.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Peggy Hamric, R-Houston, urged the House to defeat any amendments to the measure. She and other members chastised Nixon for making the members vote on a controversial amendment instead of filing a separate bill.

33. In my youth in Texas they used to have blue laws.
Things like you could not buy tools or some types of tools on Sunday. If the fundies want to restrict alcohol and such, let them. Anything that provides frequent irritation to the general public is gona help us outta this fundie funk faster.

37. It's like that in CT, sort of
The "naked" part of the club is open to anyone aged 18 and up, and serves only soft drinks. You just walk over the non-naked bar where the dancer wear g-strings, pasties, whatever, get liquored up, then walk back over to the titty side.

You can't stop titty bars and porn. There is alway some loophole waiting to be exploited. In fact, I think that was the plot of "LUSTY LAWYERS: PART XII," Starring F. Me Daily.
