1. Absolutely disgusting!
Let's take away free thought, impose an official religion, impose an official preacher to evangelize every night, impose Bible teachings in public schools, etc...

I hope that church loses the majority of its members.

I like what the guy said at the end. "We asked the church for a comment: not a prayer." LOL.

people need to be confronted with the fact that this current group of so-called Christian Republicans are corrupting Churches and turing them into Political arms of the GOP. Any "Real" Christian should be apalled by this.

On Edit: this is also why I no longer consider myself a Baptist.
:grr: :kick:

10. You have it backwards.
Repubs aren't turning churches into political arms of the GOP; the GOP is becoming nothing more than the political arm of the religious right.

It disturbs me that the few moderates left in the party aren't saying anything about their party's transformation. They are cowards.

27. I think they're using each other
I think the GOP are using the religious right for votes and in reality they don't give a damn about them except when it comes election time for someone. I think the religious right thinks they care and they think they're the one's who got Bush back in power so they have this whole idea that the GOP owes them for voting Bush back in.

status, and I would think the other Baptists would not want them to call themselves Baptists, either. They are a political cult, not a church congregation, and they should be treated and leagally viewed as such.

In another thread, someone who knew people at that church said that the congregation APPLAUDED when the minister said those who did not vote for the blivet** should lseave.

Horrifying, and they cannot be allowed to continue to call themselves a regular Baptist church with all the tax perks at our expense. NO FRIGGING WAY.
:grr:

Anywone hear what the ACLU is doing yet?

Edited to add - how could I have forgotten the first time? - Thanks for this, dzika!

15. More like the parties have reversed themselves in some ways
Republicans used to be the conservative ones - now they are more radical than the Democrats ever would consider being even at their wildest. And part of that radicalism is aimed at bigots and antigays who want to be told that their government speaks for Jesus.

14. just because there's a cross and some bibles doesn't mean it's a church
it's often difficult to determine exactly whether or not an organization is a political one, there are many gray zones and borderline actions.

banning members based on their support of a presidential candidate is one of the few clearcut defining acts of a political organization.

so let's stop calling it a church because it isn't one. it's a republican theocratic organization and should be labelled and TAXED as such.

18. it's a private organisation
it can discriminate against anyone it wants. You cannot force a membership organisation to accept people who it doesn't agree with. Certainly it should lose it's tax-exempt status, if it has one, but then it can discriminate on the basis of thought all it wants.

once you are for-profit and private, you can exclude people who disagree with you on anything. Right, Skinner?

20. Other privledges
There are other privledges that come with tax-exempt status.

Plus they should be under campaign laws.

They should have limits on their donations, have to declare their records publicaly AND

we should shut their doors before elections during the media blackout.

;)
