Freepers and computers...
Comments freepers made in response to a story about Apple Computer leasing thousands of iBooks to Cobb County schools:

FREEPER #1: "Gigantic waste of money, IMO. And it has nothing to do with Apple versus Microsoft or whatever - the schools piss money away on laptops and all sorts of other whiz-bang gadgets. Meanwhile, they can't reliably teach kids to add, read, or understand that it takes the earth one year to orbit the sun."

FREEPER #2: I agee. No student should get his hands on a computer until he can read, write, and do basic arithmatic.

1. Nice.
Freeper #2 got his computer in spite of his F in spelling.

Bet he's a whiz at arithmatic, though.

3. The poor freepers can't spell or punctuate properly
much less utilize proper grammar. It gives them away every time.

4. Don't his generalizations only apply to students?
Everyone else is off the hook, until they take classes at the local community college... ;)

6. I never thought I'd find myself in this distasteful position but
There's a nugget of truth in Freeper 1's remark. Computers aren't the super learning aide they've been promoted as being. They certainly have their place in the classroom, however. I recall reading about a long-term study a few years ago, but I'm too tired and lazy to do any research on it tonight.

8. Quite True...
I too remember reading a pretty compelling article in the Economist on what I believe is the study you refer to. I believe the study cited also demonstrated (convincingly) that for very young children, (i.e. grades K-6,) PCs can actually prove to be a detrimental distraction...

Gee, way back when I last dared take a peek at the FreiKorp.com boards, they were gloating over the death of Rachel Corrie, (the 23-year old killed by an Israeli bulldozer,) or describing just how the bodily harm they would inflict should they encounter an actual anti-war protester. (Try it chickenhawk!!) These guys seem like a Princeton panel discussion in comparison...

9. A computer is just a tool
if used properly it can educate a child much faster and with more enjoyment than textbook learning. If not it could teach a kid to sit around all night posting opinions on a political website...
Seriously though, by the time these kids graduate and move into the job market, computer skills are going to be as essential as math and reading skills.

7. Freepers and computers
Do not mix. I did tech support for Dell for 7 months. If I could get a responce out of a red stater that made some sense, I was lucky. Examples include: monitor = TV, computer = hard drive, monitor = computer, mouse = unknown device that need repeated instructions to operate, "can't get on AOL" = "I need more porn", and "what does the screen say?" = "Dell!"

Last night my ex-wifes mother calls me, she's having a computer problem. "I can't get my floppy drawer open, I press the little button and nothing happens"
"Uh.. there is no floppy drawer, you just put the disk in."

"Oh! I thought it worked like the CD player"

"Uh.. no, just put the disk in, the side with the metal circle faces down".

"OK, how do I get the disk out of the case".

12. I'm not sure they ever will...
most of the R's I have met are closet Luddites. Maybe that explains their general inability in spelling. I get to tease them by saying they should go back to 3x5 cards and a typewriter. Boss did not know what WIFI is..."I hate computers." Sheesh.

13. I thought there was an international treaty against freepers using 'puters
or did Bush back out of that one? Wasn't it called something like FART - Freepers Are Retards Treaty?

14. Ha ha
I recognized one of those email addresses! It is a guy I met on another discussion board. His bad spelling was what gave him away. Then I realized the message was the same one he sent me one time in an email.
