Day 1 CNN Free
Edited on Wed May-04-05 08:22 PM by matcom
Dear Diary: I ALMOST turned it on this morning but there was a GREAT local story on a traffic accident on the Mass Pike. I didn't succumb to the temptation.

Have been CNN-free for 24 hours now. Report: NO ill side effects to date.

Note: I have not heard ONE WORD about the "Runaway Bride OR the Michael Jackson trial". I have NO IDEA what is/isn't happening with both of those RIVETING cases. I sure hope I can be strong.

Hope I don't have any problems tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

2. You're missing important Runaway Bride information.
You will have absolutely nothing to say during awkward moments in the office bathroom.

3. I quit everything the day after the election
Save for "Countdown" and The Daily Show, I watch none of the other crap and my head's clear. I haven't any sense of missing anything of value.

And I'm reading a novel every couple of days.

Good luck - you won't regret holding out.

30. I quit the day after the election, too.
I was too heartbroken to watch; then the pain turned to anger(rage, actually), and my blood pressure couldn't take it. I do read the web sites, though. Somehow, they are less incendiary.

4. As an alternative, you should peruse this DU thread instead...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x3180176

...the informative and heartbreaking saga (from Weekly World News) of a 590 pound circus clown who gets his unicycle stuck in his butt.

When I posted it last night, people asked "Where's Matcom?"

Where's Matcom, INDEED.

A nation wept, and in its attempt to come together, a voice rose from the masses:

"Where's Matcom?"

10. Feels good, doesn`t it?
I`ve been CNN free since November 4, 2004. Haven`t been to Faux News for over two years. If Bush appears on tv, I turn it off or leave the room. What a relief.

even more riveting?
I really want to know, because I was tuned into Judy WoofWoof yesterday and heard that bespeckled idiot (Bill Schneider?) comparing Blair's involvement in Iraq to Clinton's 'personal' problems. Like, the blivet has absolutely nothing to do with anything?

16. And trust me outrage is even better by proxy
You still have every opportunity to get in a rage reading DU threads at whatever a hole "journalist" on CNN says. It's fun-at a great distance.

Really, my life is less polluted without it. I never boycotted anything on TV before and (like you I suspect don't know..)am a TV addict from way back.

As a pointed protest it feels even better. It feels right. I don't bedgrudge anyone what they choose to read or watch. It's not just a don't choose that show thing-it's CNN is scum of the earth and I refuse to watch propaganda thing.

If your jonesing really bad Bloomberg without sound i find tolerable in very small doses. Otherwise my viewing habits are void of most propaganda and my outrage is more contained to the truly egregious acts rocking my world.

34. I stopped watching commercial TV when I was eleven.
That was thirty-four years ago. I haven't missed much.

I've never seen a single episode of Dallas, Three's Company, The Cosby Show, Desperate Housewives, Queer Eye, Survivor, Seinfeld, or any of the other "must see" TV. I don't think I've suffered as a human being. Whenever I do get trapped somewhere with a television turned on, I'm stunned by the sheer stupidity of what's on the screen. It's either shallow and biased "news" reporting, or some program that's supposed to be "dynamic" or "funny" - and which is usually neither.

I'm well informed - through reading. I have a nice collection of films and rent videos/DVDs. I watch what I want to watch when I want to watch it.

During the hours that I should be watching TV according to statistics, I run my own small business, paint pictures that sell, make jewelry, write novels, garden, design and sew my own clothes and explore any other creative avenue that catches my fancy.

I don't need anyone to entertain me, or to tell me what is "must see". Particularly as far as news goes. It was a long time ago that the line between news and scandal got irrevocably blurred, courtesy of commercial television.

You'll do fine. Now that you've kicked CNN, you might find yourself becoming impatient with some of the other stuff on TV too, and decide that you'd like more of your time to be your own.

35. Cspan
the only cable news program worth turning on anymore. The others are watered-down drivel for the most part, and definitely right-leaning. (Ok, except for Olberman)

I like to get my news from PBS or one of the major networks(ABC's Nightline and Charlie Rose, especially). They are less right-leaning than cable news, but all too often major stories are left out. You always have to supplement your news "diet" with the internet.
