andy has a cancerous tumor at the neck of his pancreas...Andy is going to John's Hopkins to the No.1 doctor in the country for success in the removal of this type of tumour and cancer treatment..but Andy does not have health insurance..and John's Hopkins wanted 1/2 down of the fees for the surgery..the surgery will cost $50,000.00 , and JH wanted $25,000.00 by yesterday to not cancel the surgery...well "WE DID IT!!"..FROM THURDAY TILL 1 PM EASTERN TIME YESTERDAY we succeeded in getting the deposit we held a 4 day marathon 24 hours straight for 4 days ..with everyone at Du's help, and the help of Will Pitt, Mike Malloy, and Tom Hartman and so many people throughout the country who sent emails to their friends...and democratic lists..and phone calls..this was a truely collective effort...by everyone at DU!!
but we are not done...we still need to continue to work for donations..to pay for the rest of the surgery..

i have never seen such an out pouring of love and kindness...
it makes me proud to say the word "liberal" ..as "liberal" mean caring , loving, kind people!! Liberal means doing for others not as fortunate as ourselves..and helping others when they are down...and need a helping hand!!

i've set aside something for spring planting, but when i went into the yard today.....my garden, one of the few things that bring me joy, began screaming at me. a wisteria that i have been coaxing for five years that grows on the chain link fence that separates my property has copious buds and will finally bloom for the first time. it was as if it was waiting for the perfect time to say something. the crab apples (still quite young) are in full bud...and the lilies are poking through, the azaleas are shameful, the early spring flowers are dotting the yard and making a show....the garden is telling me something....and i realize i don't need the flats of anuals this year...so i'm sending what little i have set aside...to plant a small seed for the health of someone who needs our help in this wonderful comunity...it is what i can with my gratitude for all you have done...so get well andy so you can carry on the great work...all americans owe you a deep debt...and i commune with those who use mirrors and smoke to balance things out...ss will come tomorrow and i will see what more i can do.

i haven't had any luck with seeds in this cold climate and i don't have a hothouse or a place to start seeds early...i have had more luck recognizing plants that have promise in the lawns that other people mow...so they never see the flower. it's really amazing what is in other peoples lawns that they never see. like campanula, violets and michaelmas daisies and many others.

if this is any solace..last year i had a friend in need and instead of doing my annual flowers which i sooooo love and which bring me such everlasting joy..i used the money for the friend..and i never regretted one moment..and when summer was in full force..i bought a artificial bunch of flowers and put them in my beds..and for the entire summer people kept telling me how beautiful my flower bed was...as people have to walk past my house to go to the beach..well i got the biggest giggle all summer long..because it seems only my husband and i knew they were artifical...and guess what ..they were ecologically better..as they didn't need to be watered or pruned!!

i will do the same this year..and the money will go to andy as well!!

in fact my close friends are going to do the same this year..as they saw how much water it saved!! and my " flowers" always had blooms ..no matter which holiday we were having..and they were very pretty in october ..for the clam chowder festival..when everyone elses flowers were long gone....

I'm not the only one who "plants" fake flowers!!!
Not only is my thumb not green, I've nicknamed it "The Grim Reaper".
I've managed to kill a cactus and a rhododendron, if that tells you anything! That's in addition to the dozens of other plants that have withered and died in my care. But I love plants and flowers, so I finally bought a batch of fake blooms and stuck them in the ground around my house one year. It's great -- like you said, no watering or tending necessary, and I just pull them out in the fall and stick them back in the next spring. Nobody knows the difference! And the best part is, I can't kill them!!

I was saving up money for a scanner, so I could upload family pictures to my computer. I wanted to post some on a little group I've joined, but that's the money I sent to Andy for now, till I get my next paycheck and can send more. Lucky for me, my good friend & neighbor just got a scanner, so he's going to upload my pics and email them to me. Funny how things tend to sort themselves out, isn't it?? :-)

from the previous season. I know I did. Usually, I pull out everything that I didn't plant as a weed. the thing is to mix the colors ...

they even have salvia!!..so put a little blue /purple with pink and white..and the geraniums are beautiful..i put them in hanging pots too and they never need water..and dont mess up your porches!!

just mix little white or little pinks with reds and walla!!

or blues with pinks...thats the key then they look real!! throw in a few yellows too!!

buy them in clumps...and buy a pair of wire cutters..and plant in bunches and cut up the other colors..yellows and blues off of clumps and put them in intermittingly!!

138. That's how I'll do it next year

I was a single parent without child support when I decided on the fake flowers, so I got mine at yard sales and the Dollar Tree store. I worked at Wal-Mart at the time (did a nine-year sentence at Wal-Mart, is more like it) and couldn't even afford the flowers there. I started out with tulips and hibiscus, and over time I added different things to the mix, including daffodils, daisies, and just plain greenery to make it believable. Found some wicker hanging baskets with trailing pink and purple silk flowers at a yard sale, and hung them on the porch.

We're not putting the flowers out this year, because we're going to be putting on a new roof and painting the house trim, so there will be scaffolding and ladders right where my "flower beds" usually are.
Plus, the poor flowers themselves have gotten pretty sun-faded and weather damaged over the years.
(I guess I CAN kill fake plants, if given enough time!!! lol) They've done their duty, time to retire them.
Next year, I'm starting over with an actual plan! :headbang:

there are wild campanula that i have been nurturing that are becoming rampant and plenty of foxglove, one of my favorites, and a plant i cant remember the name that is gray lambs ear foliage with a cardinal red flower that sparkles up the garden....and plenty of violets and i am letting the fall daisies run rampant this year. it seems that five years of the garden mawking me it is finally saying thanks for the love.....one of those small miracles that life sometimes serves up in times of need.
