Poll question: 1980: Democratic Primary--Who would you have voted for?
Ok it is now 1980 and the candidates that year were:

President Jimmy Carter of Georgia
Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts
Governor Jerry Brown of California

3. Carter. Most definitely.
I hate the f***ing repukes who say that liberal Democrats can't be Christian. The f**ckheads who voted for Reagan in 1980 voted for a divorced Hollywood actor over a born-again Christian. "Family values", my ass! :eyes:

11. Except Carter wasn't a liberal then. That is why Kennedy challenged him
to give voice to the left. People today forget or have no idea that Carter governed fairly conservatively for the time.

I would still vote Carter though, because splinterism is NEVER good for the Democratic party.

17. Carter was a true moderate. Moderate now seems to be where right
was then. Carter only appears more liberal because of politics today. I see nothing wrong with being truly moderate. What we've got today just isn't.

12. Does there have to be a point?
I think its kind of fun to see how we would have voted in past elections or how people actually did vote.

Guess I'm uptight about the world in general and some other stuff in particular. A few threads, which have been locked, kinda ticked me off. Anyway, I thought Carter was the right man for the job. And he was.
edited for lousy typing and no proofreading

21. I saw that. I was so politically ignorant back then that I could not
even give an answer. I probably voted Republican :(

Still it is fun to see what people have to say. Why don't you do some other years and include Republicans.

Thanks for the post.

13. I did vote for Carter.
My first vote. Ever. Felt good. They gave us 18 y/o's the right to vote, then took away our right to drink legally. Bastards

Peace

15. woulda voted Brown and hated myself for it by now
Kennedy should not have attacked Carter that year, the Democratic Party should not have hidden the facts of the October Surprise investigation from the American voters 12 years later, either. With 20/20 hindsight, it really looks like most of the mainstream Democratic Party political players and decisions really sucked over the Reagan/Bush years. Did they get worse after that?

19. Ted Kennedy was more qualified to be President.
I think Carter should have stepped down. We could debate whether the oil crisis, the hostage crisis, the malise speech, high inflation & interest rates, recession, etc. were problems that Carter could have better solved....or these would have been unsovable for any president. Regardless, they happened on watch.

I've heard several management experts claim that Carter was in over his head as President. I like Carter....but I think he should have voluntarily stepped down and let Kennedy take over.

20. well if he stepped down (resigned?) Mondale would have been
president. Unless you mean he should not have ran? and let Kennedy have the nomination. But if Carter hadn't run, chances are Mondale would have run and it would have been like '68 all over again. Except I think Mondale would have beat Kennedy as well for the nomination.

23. No - I meant stepped down from his re-election campaign.
I've always viewed Ted Kennedy as being high in leadership and inspirational skills.

I think Reagan won both elections because he was a movie star campaigning against 2 policy wonks. If Mario Cuomo or Ted Kennedy had run, they might have beaten Reagan because they can tap into voter's emotions.

22. I voted for John Anderson that year in the General Election, because
he was the only one talking about a substantial tax on gasoline. If we had done that then and put the money into public transportation infrastructure, the world would be a better place today.
