Spanking your pets - yes or no?
Sometimes I will give my cat a little spank if she is bad, is this wrong?

17. Well, my copycat thread lasted almost two minutes before
disappearing without a comment from the mod.

Thankfully, I don't have to waste time in ATA complaining.

3. My wife and I have this argument.
I say it's okay to give the cat a little pat if she runs out in the garage. My wife says no. The cats are spoiled.

26. Thanks. An actual Paris street scene.
A musician making a ton of dough with the cat in the bed as the attraction. A real crowd pushing forward. My question is--what does the cat do on its day off? It can't just lie around. That's its job.

Only in Paris...
(Please don't show this to my cats, they get enough ideas on their own.)

4. No
Violence is negative reinforcement and negative reinforcement is nowhere near as effective as positive reinforcement for good behavior.

to hit or spank a dog. Never.

Absolutely. She doesn't know something is wrong. If you want her to stop something, speak to her loudly or make a noise. Don't hit her.

You just make an animal afraid of your hands.

11. find a way to discipline them
you must have boundaries, I had a parrot when he misbehaved, I would either cover his cage or refuse to play Dolly Parton, he loved Dolly Parton, it was quite effective.

13. a bonk on the nose for deliberate biting... otherwise no
If they (dogs) bite me, i usually grab them and bite them back on the
nose. This has happened maybe twice in 10 years.

Otherwise, what are hands for, but caresses, huggies, scratching those
itchy spots and general pampering. Doggies respond so much better to
being treated like intelligent beings, than animals... as if the
expectation of being equals makes them just that... and what a
divine world it is, a dog pack... the ultimate social democracy. :-)

14. Never
My cats understand and comply with the word "NO!"

I've never felt a need to physically discipline a cat beyond squirting them with water.

My snakes would have no idea in hell what I was doing.

Casper: "You figured out this primate yet?"
Sheikh Yerbouti: "Not a clue. But she does kill mice for us."
Casper: "Yeah, I guess."

i spanked both of mine when they were kittens. not hard mind you. but they don't climb on counters, they don't scratch couches, and they come when i call.

one of them has a few issues now, but we've graduated to spray bottles.

25. Where's their butt?!
No padding for spankings. The only physical discipline between me and my cat is what he gives me when I'm bad. The really sad thing is I'm telling ya the truth here. :)

28. The message might be lost in spanking. Take time to train them
using words, praise, treats, and repetition. Dogs love the challenge and attention you give them during training.

34. Clapping, loud verbal commands, and the spray bottle
seem to work pretty well with our cats, but they were very well-behaved to begin with. Nothing good could possibly come from physically disciplining a cat, unless you want them walking around in a constant state of terror...:scared:

29. No, if they're puppies Growl at them
And maybe bite them gently. Thats what the Alpha in the pack would do. They understand that.

Downside: You get a mouth full of hair.

35. So that's why you have 'puppy breath'?
Actually, I recommend a nip on the ear for people with head strong pups. That and rolling them on their backs then placing your neck over their throat (paying close attention to keeping them immobile so yo don't get bitten yourself.)

Nothing says 'I'm alpha' like doing it as the leader of a pack would. Takes time to convince people I am serious, but they always get well mannered dogs who still have a sense of self when they do it!

Have a large glass of water or something after chewing on an ear. Patoohie! fur...
